HOUSTON – A Pearland softball coach is charged after being accused of inappropriately touching an 11-year-old player, court records show.

Carlos Morgan, 59, is accused of having inappropriate contact with the child before and during batting lessons, officials said. Morgan was charged with indecent assault and was arrested on Thursday but has since bonded out.

According to the court documents, Morgan would pick up the girl and take her to batting cages at 5 Tool Sports Hitting & Training in Pearland.

“Quite frankly, I was flabbergasted, surprised, upset,” said facility owner Steve Jones. “Then, all of it turned to anger and disgust as you can imagine.”

Jones said Morgan frequently rented a batting cage at his facility. He said his facility is not the only location in Pearland where he trained young softball players.

“You would have never thought he would be that type of person,” Jones said.

The girl’s mother reported to police that Morgan kissed her daughter on the mouth and used his tongue on multiple occasions, per court documents. The alleged incidents happened in Morgan’s truck outside the batting cage facility.

Court records reveal the girl’s mother learned of the alleged abuse when one morning, the child was supposed to attend batting practice with Morgan and she told her mother she didn’t want to go. The mother told police she questioned the girl and that’s when she told her about the kissing.

According to court documents, Morgan would get upset if the child didn’t kiss or hug him back, bought her gifts and texted her “I love you,” and demanded a return text with the same.

When questioned by the police, Morgan admitted to kissing the chid but said he never used his tongue, per court documents. Police said he said he gave her a “peck” on the cheeks and lips.

According to court documents, Morgan also admitted to sending “I love you,” texts but not in a sexual gratifying, but as if she was his own child. He also said he bought her Christmas presents and other gifts.

One parent Kameca Coffey said she has known Morgan for almost a decade. He coached both her daughters.

She said Morgan had become more like a family member than a coach. His arrest came to her as a shock.

“I felt betrayed, I felt lied to, I felt stupid, I felt dumb. I felt… How could I put my baby in that situation? We trusted him,” she said.

Pearland Police Department spokesman Jason Wells said since the victim has spoken up, several more have come forward.

“Unfortunately, we’re talking a wide range from anywhere to nine years old to 17,” Wells said.

Wells also said investigators believe there are other victims since Morgan has coached since the early 2000s.

If you want to report any incident, call the Pearland police at 281-997-4151.

The Pearland Girls Softball Association released a statement after accusations against Morgan came to light:

“Due to recent charges filed against Carlos Morgan Sr., PGSA would like to state that although he is a batting instructor in the city of Pearland he does not use any facilities under our control and is not affiliated with PGSA,” the group wrote. “We take pride in our organization and your daughters’ safety is our first priority. PGSA requires yearly background checks and Safesport training for anyone currently involved in coaching.”

A witness told Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office investigators that the 17-year-old high school baseball player from PSJA Memorial sought a gun from an associate before allegedly shooting and killing 19-year-old Genaro Isaiah “Izzy” Castillo.

The sheriff’s office arrested Carlos Julian Contreras on Jan. 15 and charged him with the murder of Castillo, who was found 10 to 15 minutes after he died on a caliche road in the Donna Lakes area near a sugarcane field, according to authorities.

After his arrest, Contreras admitted to picking up Castillo in his white Ford F150 and driving him to the area before someone he knew only as Jorge, shot Castillo several times with a black handgun, according to a probable cause affidavit.

At a news conference after the man’s arraignment last week, Sheriff J.E. “Eddie” Guerra said investigators determined that Jorge did not exist.

“Sheriff’s Investigators were able to identify and locate one of Carlos’ associates by the name of Brandon Marquez,” the charging document read. “Brandon advises that he had spoken to one of Carlos’ friends by the name of Jacob Villalon who said Carlos had been looking for a gun to ‘take out ‘Izzy’ and ‘Reggie’ before they took him out.’”

Investigators interviewed Villalon, who stated Contreras “was asking him for a gun to take out ‘Izzy,’” according to the affidavit.

Guerra said at the news conference that Contreras is the sole suspect in the case.

Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office investigators and crime scene specialists were at the scene of the homicide the evening of Tuesday, Jan. 14, in the Donna Lakes area. (Joel Martinez | jmartinez@themonitor.com)

Guerra also said investigators arrested Contreras at his home and discovered a bloody napkin and .40 caliber casings in his truck, while describing Contreras as a “bully” who made people fearful.

The official said investigators also believe that Contreras and Castillo were involved in a criminal enterprise, but did not elaborate. The probable cause affidavit provides no details on the alleged criminal enterprise.

Castillo was shot in the head, torso and chest, according to the sheriff’s office.

At his arraignment, Contreras’ attorney, Aviel Flores, said his client had been on the varsity baseball team and was a fire explorer for the city of Alamo.

Flores was asking for a bond reduction, which was denied. Contreras remains jailed on a $1 million bond.

Public records indicate that Contreras is the son of Alamo Fire Chief Ray Contreras.

The attorney for a former Wheaton College football player who authorities say was the victim of a hazing by five other players turned over his client’s medical records to a DuPage County judge Wednesday.

The records were sought by attorneys representing the five players, who are charged with aggravated battery and other crimes. But Terry Ekl, attorney for the ex-player, said the defense attorneys were “trying to create an issue that doesn’t exist.”

Authorities allege the five players injured the other player during a hazing incident in March 2016. The other player has since left Wheaton College.

At a court appearance last month, defense attorneys requested the medical records of the former player, who authorities say suffered shoulder injuries during the alleged incident. Evidence of a pre-existing injury could bolster the case for the accused players — Kyler Kregel, Noah Spielman, Samuel TeBos, Benjamin Pettway and James Cooksey.

At a hearing Wednesday, Ekl gave the records over to Judge Brian Telander.

“We’re willing to turn these over because they don’t show anything,” Ekl said afterward. “There’s no pre-existing shoulder injury.”

The judge will inspect the medical records and then share anything deemed relevant with the defense attorneys.

Meanwhile, attorney Paul Moreschi, who represents one of the players, asked the court to allow him to subpoena a dozen other people or organizations that had contact with the player who was allegedly hazed.

Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Pawl asked for additional time to review the defense request to see whether prosecutors would seek to object. The judge set a status date for March 21.

The five players are accused of aggravated battery, unlawful restraint and mob action. Authorities say they restrained and beat their teammate, a freshman, as part of a hazing incident. The player’s arms were bound so tightly with duct tape that he suffered muscle tears in both shoulders that later required surgery, authorities said.

After the alleged incident, the player left Wheaton College and transferred to a school in Indiana.

The next hearing on the case is set for March 14, but DuPage County Judge Brian Telander is not requiring they attend the hearing. The records being subpoenaed including those from a orthopedic doctor in Fort Wayne, Ind., the victim saw at one time.

At about 11:20 p.m. March 19, 2016, Wheaton police officers responded to Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield regarding an incident that involved members of the Wheaton College football team.

The victim reported receiving serious injuries when he was attacked by five members of the team and left in a field with his limbs secured with tape.

“He was attacked by the suspects in a dorm room where he was subdued with tape,” Wheaton Deputy Police Chief William Murphy previously said in an email. “His arms and legs were bound and a hood placed over his head. During this [time] his shoulders were injured. They dropped him off in a nearby baseball field.”

A second person also was hazed as part of the incident but chose not to press charges, Murphy said.

Wheaton College previously had released a statement saying it was “deeply troubled” by the allegations, The college revised its anti-hazing policy in 2014 and improved its training protocols to “include a formal review of our anti-hazing policy with all student athletes every year, with required student signatures,” the statement read.

A University of Alabama football player arrested earlier this week was charged after police found less than a tenth of a gram of marijuana in his dorm room, according to court records.

Officers found 0.08 grams of marijuana locked in a safe after freshman tight end Major Tennison let them search his dorm room in the athletic dorm late Sunday night.

Tennison, 19, was in his first-floor room at Bryant Hall when an officer working in the lobby smelled marijuana at 11:21 p.m., according to records filed in Tuscaloosa County District Court Friday.

The officer knocked on the door to the room because it is adjacent to the lobby, according to the report. Tennison allowed him inside, and admitted he had smoked marijuana after the officer noticed residue on a table.

The officer read Tennison his rights at 11:38 p.m. before asking if there was any more marijuana in the room. Tennison first said no, according to the report, but then told him there was some left in the locked safe on the table.

A police supervisor arrived at the dorm at 11:43 p.m. and searched the room, without finding anything else. The officers tested and weighed the marijuana, reporting that it was 0.08 grams — about a quarter of the amount in an average-sized joint. Tennison wasn’t arrested until Wednesday on the misdemeanor charge. He was released on $300 bond.

Tennison as a 6-foot, 5-inch, 245-pound tight end from Flint, Texas listed as a freshman on the 2017 team. He played in five games during the 2017 season and caught two passes for 30 yards, according to the team’s website.
