Ryan Leaf, the former Washington State quarterback and No. 2 overall NFL draft pick who recovered from substance abuse problems to carve out a career in sports broadcasting, was reportedly arrested Friday in Palm Springs, California, on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge according to TMZ.

According to a booking report filed by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Leaf was charged with domestic battery of a spouse, former spouse, fiancee, dating partner, or co-parent and was arrested by the Palm Desert Police Department around 2 p.m. Leaf was then booked into jail at 3:32 p.m., according to the report.

Bail for Leaf was set at at $5,000. He was still in custody when this story was posted and no further details about what may have led to the reported dispute are available. Leaf is set to appear in court at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The 44-year-old has been engaged to Anna Kleinsorge, a former Georgetown volleyball player, since 2017. She gave birth to their first child, McGyver, in October 2017. Leaf was formerly married to Nicole Lucia, at the time a cheerleader for the San Diego Chargers – the team that made Leaf the No. 2 pick of the NFL draft in 1998 – but the two separated in 2003 and later filed for divorce.

On Thursday, Leaf posted a video of his son running in circles in their house, along with a caption that read, “Come on…this is one cute kiddo, loving this time with my family. Look what we made @bannanazon #loveyou.” The Twitter handle, @bannanazon, is linked to an account for Leaf’s fiancee, Kleinsorge.

A native of Great Falls, Leaf has spent the past two years working as a college football color analyst. He worked multiple WSU games for the Pac-12 Network before inking a deal with the ESPN networks last July. Leaf and broadcast partner Clay Matvick were on the call for the Cougars’ most recent game, a 31-21 loss to Air Force in the Cheez-It Bowl at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Last year, Leaf was also inducted into the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the 2019 class, and was celebrated on the field during the Cougars’ Sept. 7 game against Northern Colorado.

Leaf’s career in the NFL lasted just five seasons. The former Heisman Trophy finalist is widely considered one of professional football’s biggest disappointments, especially in relation to where he was picked in the 1998 draft, just one spot after Indianapolis Colts great and future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning.

Seven years after his NFL career ended, after Leaf made just 21 starts with the San Diego Chargers and Dallas Cowboys, he encountered legal trouble and was indicted on burglary and controlled-substance charges in Texas. Three years later, Leaf was in Great Falls when he was arrested on burglary, theft and drug charges, then arrested less than a week later on similar charges.

Leaf’s situation worsened when he was found guilty of “behavior that violated conditions of his drug treatment placement” and subsequently accused of threatening a program staff member at his rehabilitation center. In May 2014, Leaf was incarcerated in Shelby, Montana, and four months later was sentenced to five years, although he was released seven months later.

Since his release, Leaf has managed to curb his substance abuse problems and used his platform to speak to various groups about the severity of drug addiction. In addition to his work in sports media – Leaf co-hosts a Pac-12 radio show on Sirius XM – the former QB has served as a program ambassador for Transcend Recovery Community, a group of sober living houses in cities across the country.

Leaf delivered a speech at a HOF ceremony in Spokane the night before he was celebrated in front of tens of thousands of fans at Martin Stadium, telling the crowd, “I can only expect there were many years when the athlete maybe deserved to be here, but the man didn’t live up to it. And that’s why I think it’s so much more special today. I’m so glad I’m sober to appreciate what you guys have given me.

“Over the last 21 years since I left Washington State, for a long time I didn’t represent the crimson and gray very well. And because my name was recognized and talked about all the time when I messed up, you guys were drug down into the mud with it, and you didn’t deserve it. It’s an opportunity for me to apologize to all of you for having been that person for so long.”

Former Indianapolis Colts linebacker Antonio Morrison has been charged with attacking a security guard and a deputy while detained at a hospital in Indianapolis, authorities said.

Morrison, a fourth-round pick by the Colts in the 2016 NFL Draft, was charged on Tuesday in a May 14 attack at Community Hospital North in Indianapolis, where he was housed in a behavioral health wing after supposedly threatening a neighbor he was arguing with, according to a report by the Indianapolis Star.

Morrison was reportedly found banging on a nursing station door through Plexiglas, and he threatened to harm staffers and security officers at the hospital, per a probable cause affidavit.

Charles Bollinger, a responding Marion County deputy, could not get into the unit at first because Morrison held the door shut, but a second deputy and a security guard eventually made their way into the unit, per authorities.

Morrison than attacked deputy Kurt Meuris and hospital security guard James Blaydoe. The officer was reportedly punched in the head and mouth but managed to defend himself, the affidavit says. Morrison kept resisting orders to comply until Bollinger used a stun gun on him, and he was then handcuffed, the deputies said.

He remained held without bail on Thursday at the Marion County Jail ahead of his next court date which is on July 7, according to records.

DETROIT, MI (WILX) — Several news outlets are reporting that former Michigan State University basketball player Keith Appling, 28, has been arrested on drug charges.

The Macomb Daily is reporting that Appling has been charged with possessing 19 grams of heroin in his vehicle after he was stopped by police in Warren last weekend.

Appling has had run-ins with the law before. He was sentenced to one year in jail back in 2017 for carrying a concealed weapon and resisting police.

During that sentencing, he told the court he was extremely disappointed in himself and was ready to get his life back on track.

Appling played for Michigan State from 2010 to 2014 and had two, brief contracts with the NBA’s Orlando Magic.

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A coach with the Baton Rouge Soccer Club has been arrested for reportedly sexually assaulting one of his former players.

According to a news source in Connecticut, Adam Allerton, 42, is charged with multiple counts of sexual assault. Booking records for the East Baton Rouge Parish Jail confirm his arrest. We have requested the detailed arrest report. The CT Post reports he was released from jail after posting a $100,000 bond.

Police say an 18-year-old recently came forward, saying Allerton sexually assaulted her while she was a member of his team at a school in Waterbury, Connecticut. Allerton reportedly coached there from 2008 to 2013. The victim claims the assaults began when she was 14 and happened at Allerton’s home.

Allerton also reportedly assaulted the teen in his car on the way back to school from a practice.

Police say the victim showed police text messages between her and Allerton, where Allerton claimed the two were in love and “just got wrapped up in this together.”

We will update this story when we know more.

Ex-NBA player J.J. Hickson was arrested and charged with armed robbery in Georgia on Friday, according to inmate records from the Coweta County Sheriff’s Department. Hickson was charged with using a knife in the robbery, and is being held without bond in Coweta County Jail.

According to a Sheriff’s spokesperson, two people were “involved” in the attempted robbery, though only Hickson faces charges. They say he stole $100,000 and other items from a home in Senoia after breaking a 17-year-old’s nose upon his entry to the house through a side door. The teenager is reportedly “expected to be okay” after receiving medical treatment.

Hickson, 29, was drafted in the first round by the Cavaliers in 2008. He played for the Kings, Blazers, Nuggets, and Wizards over his eight NBA seasons, and two months ago, he signed with Lebanese club Champville SC.

Former Orioles outfielder Albert Belle was reportedly arrested Sunday during a spring training game in Scottsdale, Ariz.

According to Matt Rodewald of Fox 10 Phoenix, Belle, 51, was charged with two counts of indecent exposure, one count of DUI and one count of extreme DUI. The extreme DUI count means Belle’s blood alcohol content was measured at 0.08 or more.

Rodewald tweeted a picture of Belle’s mugshot while posting the news on Twitter.

The New York Daily News reported that Belle, 51, was booked into the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office jail, whose jurisdiction covers the San Francisco Giants training hub in Scottsdale.

The Daily News said the circumstances behind the weekend arrest were not immediately clear and that local authorities did not respond to a request for comment.

Belle spent the 10 weeks in 1990 receiving treatment for alcoholism at the Cleveland Clinic.

A five-time All-Star outfielder, Belle was one of the most feared hitters of the 1990s, winning five Silver Slugger awards and leading the American League in RBIs three times and homers once. In 1995, he became the first player to hit 50 doubles and 50 home runs in a season.

A Cleveland Indian from 1989 to 1996, he played for the Chicago White Sox in 1997 and 1998 and finished his career with the Orioles.

The Orioles made him the majors’ highest-paid player, giving him five-year, $65 million deal for the 1999 season. He played two seasons here before degenerative hip osteoarthritis forced him to retire in spring training 2001 at age 34.

Belle’s career was marked by controversy.

In 1994, he was suspended seven games in 1994 for using a corked bat and then sending Indians teammate and future Oriole Jason Grimsley to break into the locked umpires’ dressing room and replace the evidence.

In 1996, he was fined after knocking down Milwaukee Brewers infielder Fernando Viña on the base paths.

A year later, he reached a settlement in principle in a damage action filed by a teenager after a Halloween egg-throwing incident.
