VICTORIA —
The B.C. government has terminated membership in the Order of British Columbia for a former Canadian Football League player involved in a U.S. college admissions cheating scam.

David Sidoo, a former CFL player and businessman from Vancouver, was appointed to the Order of B.C. in July 2016. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud in a Boston federal court in March.

On Friday, the province announced it had revoked Sidoo’s membership in the Order of B.C.

“This process is initiated when a member of the order is convicted of a criminal offence or when their conduct undermines the credibility and integrity of the order,” the province said in a statement.

Sidoo was among 50 prominent parents, university athletic coaches and others charged in the scheme, which authorities say involved rigged entrance exams and bogus athletic credentials to make applicants look like star athletes for sports they didn’t play.

Sidoo paid the admissions consultant at the centre of the scheme US$200,000 to have someone pose as his sons using a fake ID to secure higher scores on their SATs, prosecutors said.

Sidoo and nearly two dozen parents, including Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman, pleaded guilty to the charges. Huffman was sentenced to two weeks in prison. Sentences for other parents range from no prison time to nine months behind bars.

Sidoo played professional football for six years for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and BC Lions. He was CEO of mining firm Advantage Lithium Corp. when he was arrested last year and was also a founding shareholder of an oil and gas company that was sold in 2010 for more than $600 million.

Iowa Hawkeyes basketball player Cordell Pemsl was charged with driving with a revoked license early Monday in Iowa City.

He will be suspended for Iowa’s next game at Indiana on Thursday, according to a statement from UI Athletics.

A responding officer said he pulled over Pemsl, 22, at about 1:02 a.m. near South Riverside Dr. and Highway 1 when he noticed the car he was driving had a “broken passenger taillight cover,” according to a police report.

After the officer asked for Pemsl’s license, which he said he didn’t have, he searched the National Crime Information Center for his record, the report says.

Pemsl’s record showed his Sept. 20 OWI charge and revoked license status starting Oct. 1, 2019, until March 28, 2020, according to the report.

Following the OWI charge, the junior forward was temporarily suspended from team activities.

Matthew Weitzel, communications associate director, said Pemsl’s prior suspension started on Sept. 20 and he returned to practice in late October. Pemsl didn’t play in games on Nov. 4 and Nov. 8.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – The family of a woman critically injured in an attack Monday morning on the pedestrian bridge in downtown Nashville wants the suspect’s bond to be revoked.

A review hearing for Nadir Barnwell is set for Wednesday afternoon. The 22-year-old, a former football player at Tennessee Tech and Rutgers University, is charged with attempted criminal homicide.

Metro police reported Barnwell was with the victim on the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge just before 3 a.m. Monday when officers were called to the area because the woman needed medical attention.

Barnwell reportedly told officers the woman was intoxicated and she fell while he was carrying her.

According to an arrest warrant, detectives reviewed surveillance video from the bridge and saw Barnwell grab the woman’s throat and shake her head before releasing her to the ground, where her head bounced off the pavement.

Police said Barnwell eventually called for help.

“He waited 39 minutes to call the police. 39 minutes. It’s a miracle she’s still alive,” the victim’s uncle John Betancourt told News 2. “He told police that he couldn’t remember.”

The victim was admitted to a Nashville hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Betancourt said his niece suffered a skull fracture, bleeding from her brain and a broken arm.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen,” Betancourt said of the young woman’s injuries.

Bond for Barnwell was set at $300,000.

“I want to see justice done,” Betancourt said. “We have to send a message. If we don’t send a message because this person is a star, what do we have laws for? Might as well send the young man home and say forget it.”

News 2 is not identifying the woman involved as she is a victim of domestic violence.

Former Michigan State football player Auston Robertson violated conditions of his bond for sexual assault charges when he was arrested on suspicion of aggravated armed robbery in Kansas earlier this week.

Robertson was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct last summer for allegedly forcing a woman into non-consensual sex at her apartment near Michigan State’s campus last April. Robertson pleaded not guilty to those charges and was scheduled to go to trial in Michigan next month.

Ingham County Judge Clinton Canady had allowed Robertson to move to Kansas and play football at Garden City Community College — the 2016 national champion at the junior college level — while he awaited trial.

Canady revoked Robertson’s bond at a hearing Thursday morning after learning he had been arrested again.

The Ingham County Prosecutor’s office released a statement Thursday saying it hopes revoking Robertson’s bond will allow his case in Michigan to continue moving forward.

“Our office previously objected to the bond conditions that allowed the defendant to travel out of state,” prosecutor Carol Siemon said. “While hindsight is of course 20-20, we believed at the time that continued placement here in Ingham County would allow the court to properly supervise this defendant during the pre-trial phase. It is always disconcerting when a criminal defendant fails the conditions of their bond and we believe the courts have now taken the proper action.”

Police in Kansas arrested Robertson on Monday on suspicion of aggravated armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, distribution of marijuana and interfering with law enforcement officers and are holding him on a $300,000 bond. He has not yet been formally charged with any of those crimes.

If he leaves police custody in Kansas, he will need to report to authorities in Michigan because his bond there has been revoked.

Robertson, 20, was previously arrested on a misdemeanor battery charge while in high school after a female classmate accused him of touching her inappropriately. Michigan State delayed signing Robertson to a scholarship in 2016 while the legal process for that charge played out.

Coach Mark Dantonio dismissed Robertson in April 2017 when he was charged with criminal sexual conduct after one season with the team.

Robertson’s sexual assault trial was scheduled to begin May 14, according to Brent Leder, the attorney who represents Robertson in that case. However, Leder said that trial might be put on hold while Robertson sorts through his legal issues in Kansas.

Leder said he does not represent Robertson in those matters and did not know any details of that arrest.

“We had a very brief conversations related to the hearing that was scheduled for [Thursday], and I gave him some basic legal advice,” Leder said.

Robertson was one of four former Michigan State football players charged with sexual assault crimes last summer. In a separate case, Josh King, Donnie Corley and Demetric Vance pleaded guilty to seduction charges earlier this month as part of an agreement that will likely keep them out of prison. The sentencing hearing for those three players is scheduled to take place June 6.

LANSING – Auston Robertson, a former Michigan State University football player awaiting trial on sex assault charges, had his bond in Ingham County revoked Thursday due to an alleged robbery in Kansas.

He was arrested Tuesday by Garden City, Kansas police on suspicion of four charges: aggravated robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery, distribution of marijuana, and interfering with law enforcement officers, Ingham County Assistant Prosecutor Nicole Matusko said during a bond hearing Thursday in Ingham County Circuit Court.

Robertson, 20, faces two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in an Ingham County case that dates to April 2017, when he allegedly assaulted a woman in her Meridian Township apartment.

Judge Clinton Canady III last summer agreed to modify Robertson’s bond so he could move from Ohio to attend school and play football in Kansas. He was required to wear a GPS tether as part of Canady’s conditions.

On Thursday, Canady revoked Robertson’s bond in the local case.

Robertson is currently being held on a $300,000 bond in Kansas and is expected to be formally charged there next week, Matusko said.

Robertson’s trial had been scheduled to begin in May. It’s unclear whether his Kansas case will affect the start date.

“Our office previously objected to the bond conditions that allowed the defendant to travel out of state,” Ingham County Prosecutor Carol Siemon said in a statement released after the hearing.

Robertson fled Michigan after the incident last April, and was arrested in Fort Wayne, Indiana before being extradited back to Michigan.

Garden City Community College won the 2016 National Junior College Athletic Association football championship. Last fall, Robertson played defensive end in all 12 games for the Broncos, logging 73 tackles. The team finished the season 8-4.

MSU head coach Mark Dantonio removed Robertson from the team the same day charges were announced last April.

Robertson also had legal problems before joining the Spartans.

He was arrested in January 2016 on a misdemeanor battery charge stemming from an October 2015 incident at his high school, Wayne High. Robertson was accused of improperly touching a female classmate, according to court records.

Those charges were later cleared from Robertson’s record after he fulfilled the terms of his diversionary program, the records say.
