Kansas State basketball player Amaad Wainright made his first court appearance in Johnson County Thursday on charges related to a road-rage shooting in January in Overland Park.

Wainright, who has been suspended from the basketball team as a result of the situation, is accused of aiding another man who allegedly fired a gun at another vehicle on Interstate 435.

That other man, Trevon Barr, 23, of Kansas City, is charged in Johnson County District Court with aggravated assault, discharging a firearm into a motor vehicle and criminal damage to property.

Barr made an initial court appearance Wednesday and remains in jail on a bond of $100,000.

Wainright, 22, who is from the Kansas City area, is charged with obstructing law enforcement and fleeing or attempting to flee from police.

He was booked into the Johnson County Jail Wednesday night.

He made his court appearance Thursday afternoon and was released from jail after posting bond.

Wainright’s next court hearing is scheduled for April 12.

During the incident on Jan. 17, another motorist’s vehicle was struck by gunfire, but no one was injured.

Kansas State has suspended basketball player Amaad Wainright following his Monday arrest by U.S. Marshals for his alleged connection with a January road-rage incident involving gunfire in Overland Park.

“We are aware of Amaad’s situation, and due to the seriousness of the charges he has been indefinitely suspended from our men’s basketball team per athletic department policy,” Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor said in a statement. “We take matters such as these very seriously and will re-evaluate his status as we learn more information.”

KCTV5 in Kansas City reported in February that Wainright’s car was involved in a rush hour road-rage incident on I-435 in Kansas.

“The passenger opened the door, held up a gun and shot one bullet at the back door,” the victim told KCTV5.

The bullet went through the door and lodged into the driver’s seat, but nobody was injured, according to the report. The police report showed that the passenger who fired the gun came from Wainright’s car.

In March, Kansas State responded to KCTV5 about the incident with a statement.

We are aware of the situation involving Amaad Wainright.  Amaad fully cooperated with authorities and was not charged. To our knowledge, this matter is resolved.

That was apparently not the case as Wainright is now being held by law enforcement.

The Wichita Eagle reports that Wainright has been charged with separate counts of fleeing-and-eluding and obstruction, both felonies. He is considered an “involved other” according to the report where three other charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal damage to property (estimated at $1,500) and criminal discharge of a firearm have also been filed.

The Eagle unsuccessfully attempted to reach Wainright’s parents for comment.

Wainright, a junior, averaged 2.8 points and 2.3 rebounds in 13.1 minutes per game this season for Wildcats, who made it to the NCAA tournament’s Elite Eight after upsetting Kentucky in the second round.

(Reuters) – The man tried for murder in the road-rage shooting death of former National Football League running back Joe McKnight near New Orleans in 2016 was found guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter on Friday, local media reported.

The verdict capped six days of testimony and 7-1/2 hours of deliberation by a Jefferson Parish jury in the trial of Ronald Gasser, 56, who admitted to shooting McKnight but said he acted in self-defense, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune and the news website NOLA.com.

The deadly confrontation between Gasser and McKnight, 28, occurred at a traffic intersection in the New Orleans suburb of Terrytown, where the two men stopped their vehicles after shouting vulgarities at each other and driving erratically for about 5 miles.

Gasser had been charged with second-degree murder, meaning that he acted with specific intent to kill but not with premeditation or planning. The jury instead convicted him of manslaughter, essentially a crime of passion.

Prosecutors said after the trial they were happy with the verdict and that McKnight’s family was satisfied as well.

Assistant District Attorney Seth Shute told reporters Gasser faced a possible prison term of up to 40 years when he is sentenced.

Gasser, who did not take the witness stand in his own defense, told investigators that he shot McKnight from the driver’s seat of his car as the former NFL player stood at Gasser’s open passenger-side window on Dec. 1, 2016.

According to Gasser, he feared for his life when McKnight made an aggressive movement, or lunged in such a way as to attempt to get inside his vehicle. Gasser’s lawyer argued that his client was justified in defending himself with lethal force under Louisiana’s so-called “stand-your-ground” law.

But prosecutors said physical evidence, including the lack of gunpowder residue on McKnight’s body, disputed Gasser’s account and showed the two men were farther apart than Gasser has asserted.

McKnight played in the NFL as a running back for the New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs from 2010 through 2014. He later played for the Edmonton Eskimos and Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Canadian Football League.
