NEW ORLEANS — A Tulane University football player was arrested Sunday morning for attacking a young woman in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Police say Denisha Coleman, just 70 pounds and 5’1” tall, was punched in the face early Sunday morning by 185-pound Tyler Judson.

The pair were outside of a Waffle House in Zachary. One punch, a witness said, flipped Coleman face-first onto the pavement.

Coleman’s mother, Desiree Coleman, said the two did not know each other, and her daughter didn’t pick a fight. Still, she ended up hospitalized, in intensive care, with horrific injuries. Four days after the punch, both of her eyes are still swollen shut.

“She had multiple facial fractures. She has to have surgery, but it’s not clear what the surgery’s going to be until some of the swelling goes down,” said Desiree Coleman.

Desiree met her daughter at the hospital, where a nurse was able to bring her back to see Denisha.

“I said ‘Don’t worry baby.’ I said ‘Don’t worry about what I see. You’re going to be ok.’ I said, ‘But I just need to step out and talk to the nurse.’ But I needed to get out because it was that horrible,” the mother said.

Judson played in four games as a safety for Tulane University football. He was booked on battery charges two hours after the attack.

Judson later posted bail and was released.

Tulane Athletics wrote in a statement, “As additional information has now become available concerning his arrest earlier this week, Tulane football student-athlete Tyler Judson has been dismissed from the football program after initially being suspended following his arrest. Tulane will continue to hold our student-athletes, coaches and staff to the highest of standards.”

The Colemans want to see him prosecuted. Denisha has undergone CT scans and X-rays, and will likely need surgery for eye fractures and a broken nose.

It will also cost this high school senior her walk across the stage this Friday.

“I just know that my baby was an innocent person that didn’t deserve this,” said Desiree.

An investigation is ongoing.

Legal Rights of Student Sex Abuse Victims

Attorney contributor Laurence Banville represents sex abuse victims and their families in civil lawsuits. Laurence has offered to share some info on the legal rights of students who have been sexually abused by coaches and other school employees:

Sexual predators are often found in positions of trust, including teaching, coaching, and other educational professions. School officials must do everything they can to make sure all employees are trustworthy and students are safe from sexual predators. But sadly, there have been widespread reports of teachers and coaches sexually abusing students throughout the country.

When a coach or teacher is charged with sexually abusing a student, the school should also be investigated. Some of these cases of abuse only happen due to negligence by school officials, like failing to run background checks or ignoring past complaints of inappropriate behavior by the employee who was arrested. In cases of negligence, school sex abuse victims and their families may have grounds for a lawsuit.

If you or your child is a victim of school sex abuse, you can learn more about your family’s legal options in a free consultation with one of our experienced sex abuse victim lawyers.

A Drake University student filed a lawsuit this month alleging that an unidentified men’s basketball coach at the school told a player who shot him in the head to lie to responding police officers, according to the Des Moines Register.

Drake forward Tremell Murphy accidentally shot Nathaniel Miller Jr. in the head during a party at his home near campus on Aug. 31, 2019. The gun was Murphy’s, which he had legally obtained.

After the shooting but before officers arrived, per the report, a Drake basketball coach allegedly showed up at the house. The coach then allegedly told Murphy to deny any involvement. Murphy then told officers that Miller had fallen on a wet floor and hit his head.

He was charged with making false reports to the police and discharging a firearm within city limits, both misdemeanors in Iowa. Murphy pled guilty to both accounts, according to the Des Moines Register, and was fined, placed on probation and given a suspended 30-day jail sentence.

Miller is suing the university, Murphy and the investment group that manages the property where the shooting took place. He alleged that proper medical care was delayed because of the initial false report. He had to undergo surgery, and now struggles with gait and eyesight as a result, per the lawsuit.

The university denied the allegations in the lawsuit. Drake head coach Darian DeVries did not respond to the Des Moines Register for comment, though he is not named in the lawsuit.

“It is not true as claimed by the plaintiff that a Drake men’s basketball coach told Mr. Murphy to deny involvement in Mr. Miller’s injuries,” the school said in a statement, via the Des Moines Register. “Additionally, the residence in which the shooting incident took place is a private residence and is not owned or otherwise affiliated with the university.”

Murphy played in just five games for the Bulldogs last year after suffering a season-ending knee injury in their game against Southeast Missouri State on Dec. 7. He averaged 10.4 points and 6.2 rebounds while starting all but one contest in his freshman season.

King County prosecutors have charged an 18-year-old Seattle high school student with the rape of a classmate outside a house party in November.

Jackson Sullivan, who played for West Seattle High School’s baseball team, was arrested on investigation of second-degree rape charges late last month. He posted a $350,000 bail. He is scheduled for arraignment June 4. (Court documents show the timeline was delayed because of the coronavirus.)

Interviews with several witnesses and classmates, detailed in charging documents, allege Sullivan has what the police described as other “alarming” sexual assault accusations. The police investigation into Sullivan is still ongoing, and could result in more charges, the document stated; so far, according to the documents, three other young women have accused Sullivan of nonconsensual sexual contact.

The 16-year-old who reported she was assaulted in November now has court-ordered protection from Sullivan.

The Seattle Times could not reach Sullivan. His mother declined to comment on the allegations.

The initial investigation that led to his charges was lengthy. More than five months passed between when the assault was reported and his arrest on April 29.

The process of interviewing everyone and witnesses (for a rape case) can take awhile,” said SPD Detective Patrick Michaud, who was not aware of the case when called, but spoke in general terms last week.

The King County Prosecutor’s Office “did a careful review of the totality of evidence” in the police investigation and determined it was worth charging Sullivan, said Casey McNerthney, a spokesman for the office.

Police documents reveal details from that evening and other alleged assaults.

Confidential support for survivors

If you have experienced sexual assault and need support, you can call the 24-hour National Sexual Assault Telephone Hotline at 800-656-HOPE (800-656-4673). There is also an online chat option.

Survivors in King County can call the King County Sexual Assault Resource Center’s 24-hour Resource Line at 888-99-VOICE (888-998-6423) or visit www.kcsarc.org/gethelp.

The 16-year-old girl was also a West Seattle High student. She said she’d been playing beer pong inside the November house party just before the assault, according to the documents. She’d had two drinks, she told police, but began to feel like she was blacking out after Sullivan handed her a third drink, which led her to suspect she might have been drugged.

She said her next memory is of the rape. After launching a “massive” search for her, friends found her in the van with the suspect, which was parked a short distance from the house, the documents said. They told police she was nonverbal, partially clothed and covered in her own vomit.

When they confronted Sullivan, the documents reported he said, “I thought she was good for it.” The documents stated a Washington State Patrol Crime Laboratory test determined Sullivan’s DNA was present on the teen’s underwear and vaginal swabs.

As officers investigated the November incident, they learned of other alleged incidents of assaults, according to the charging documents.

Two were from Halloween night 2017. One girl said Sullivan sat next to her, draped a blanket over her legs, and penetrated her with his fingers while others were present. Another young woman, who fell asleep next to Sullivan at a different party, said she awoke to him doing the same thing.

At a party following a school dance in March 2019, another girl, who said she was intoxicated at the time, said Sullivan made advances despite her protests, and penetrated her with his fingers while they were both in his car.

A spokesman for Seattle Public Schools declined to comment on whether Sullivan was still enrolled at the district.

He will appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

Ms Locco lost her husband, Frank, in 2017 and left behind three children, one of whom followed in their mother’s footsteps as a schoolteacher.

The educator had a long and successful career. She was a mathematics teacher, acting principal at Chandler Secondary College, principal at South Oakleigh Secondary College and held senior managerial roles in the Victorian Education Department including as acting regional director of the south-eastern region.

She was awarded an Australian Council for Educational Leaders fellowship last year.

The Education Department expressed the sadness they said was being felt across the Victorian education system.

“Deb was a much-loved and admired colleague … known to thousands of Victorian educators through her career,” a department spokesman said.

“She had a clear sense of purpose and deep strength of character, nowhere more evident than in the dignity and fortitude with which she faced the tragic death of her husband.”

Helen Koziaris, principal at South Oakleigh Secondary College, said the school community was grieving at the loss of “not only a professional colleague but a friend to all who shaped and drove educational change and supported staff, students and parents in their day-to-day lives”.

Beach Road has a renowned cycling trail stretching 17 kilometres of the bayside foreshore, with dedicated bike lanes.

Nine News reported the woman was wearing reflective gear, had lights on and was cycling in the bike lane.

On Sunday, police said there had been 92 deaths on Victorian roads so far this year compared to 124 at the same time in 2019.

FORT WORTH, Texas (Fox 4 Dallas) A former Midway athlete now living in Fort Worth is facing capital murder charges in connection with the death of his daughter.

Fox 4 in Dallas reports a fugitive task force arrested Rakeem Dory, 25, in Waco after getting a tip about his whereabouts.

He was booked into the Tarrant County jail Wednesday afternoon.

His bond is set at $500,000, according to online records.

Records show Dory played football and other sports while attending Midway High School during the 2011-2012 school year.

Dory’s daughter, 4-year-old Zianne Essix, died in February, but a medical examiner just ruled her death a homicide last week.

According to police documents, Dory called 911 on Feb. 17 because Zianne wasn’t breathing and her lips were blue.

In a police report, Dory claimed the child had fallen off a plastic slide in her playroom the previous day.

He said she appeared fine, but he put an ice pack on her head throughout the day.

Dory did admit giving Zianne “six licks” as punishment for not helping to clean up later that day.

He also said he got angry because she soiled herself several times while standing in the playroom for punishment.

Doctors at Cook Children’s Medical Center found brain swelling and significant bruising all over the little girl’s body that they said was not consistent with Dory’s story of a fall.

Investigators also found evidence of blood in the family’s playroom and they recovered recorded phone conversations between Dory and his step-parents that are now considered evidence in the capital murder case, police documents say.

Police said Zianne was living with Dory because her biological mother was already in prison for child neglect.

Dory’s wife was not at home at the time of the alleged abuse.

Another 2-year-old child in the home was not hurt.

Nathaniel Thomas pleaded guilty to aggravated assault.

CHANDLER, Ariz. — Editor’s Note: The above video is from previous coverage of the assault case involving Hamilton High School football players.

A student charged in connection to a hazing case at Hamilton High School in Chandler pled guilty Friday morning.

Nathaniel Thomas pled guilty to three counts of aggravated assault and was sentenced to six months of probation.

He may also have to pay up to $5,000 in restitution.

Thomas was charged with nine counts, including aggravated assault, sexual assault, kidnapping and child molestation in connection to a hazing incident involving high school football players, court documents say.

Thomas was the only teenager to be charged as an adult. Five other players were charged as juveniles.

Thomas was accused of participating in the sexual assault and extreme hazing among football players that took place on campus between September 2015 to January 2017.

Chandler Police recommended the former football coach, former athletic director and former principal be charged with child abuse for failing to report the assaults. All three are mandatory reporters under state law.

But former Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery declined to file charges, saying not enough victims had come forward.

The victims filed a lawsuit against the school, the administrators and the district. That lawsuit was settled, but the terms were not disclosed.

This story has been updated.

DeKalb County, GA – Rudy Crew will not be the next superintendent of DeKalb County Schools.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that on Monday the School Board did not approve Crew’s contract. To read the full story, click here.

A spokesperson for the school district said, “Today the DeKalb County Board of Education voted on the approval of Dr. Rudy Crew’s contract, with three in favor and four opposed. Based on the results of today’s vote, the Board will not offer Dr. Crew the position of superintendent of DeKalb County Public Schools. The Board is reviewing its next steps and will begin the process of identifying an alternative candidate to assume the role of interim superintendent by July 1, 2020. We will share additional updates as soon as possible.”

Board Chair Marshall Orson, Vice Chair Vickie Turner and Board Member Allyson Gevertz voted to hire Crew, while board members Diijon DaCosta, Michael Erwin, Stan Jester and Joyce Morley voted against hiring him.

Crew’s prospects took a turn for the worse on Friday, May 8, when the School Board met for hours without voting on Crew’s contract.

Crew previously served as chancellor of New York City Schools and the superintendent in Miami-Dade County. He currently serves as President of Medgar Evers College in New York.

But he also came with “baggage,” as School Board member Jester put it.

In his career, he butted heads with officials tasked with holding him accountable in New York and Miami.

According to the New York Times, Special Commissioner of Investigation Edward Stancik wrote a “withering report” that officials at a high school in Queens could have prevented a gang rape from occurring in a classroom if they’d listened to a warning from a teacher that a room was being used by students for sexual activity. The New York Times wrote that Stancik, “called on Schools Chancellor Rudy Crew to dismiss two administrators at the school and to discipline three others, including the school principal, Richard Ross.”

“In response, Dr. Crew reassigned three of those officials to administrative posts elsewhere,” the New York Times wrote. “The principal, who has tenure, remained in place, pending a decision by the Chancellor on whether to file formal disciplinary charges.”

According to the Miami New Times, “Although he reassigned the assistant principals after the scandal, Crew refused to remove Principal Richard Ross despite Stancik’s recommendation and parents’ outrage. According to news articles, Crew personally investigated the incident and found that ‘sufficient additional information’ convinced him firing Ross was inappropriate.”

Crew ran into a strikingly similar controversy in Miami. An 18-year-old star running back was accused of having sex with a 14-year-old inside a girls’ bathroom at a high school there. The girl’s mother complained to the school’s staff and got nowhere, so she filed a police report. The football player was arrested. The Miami New Times article alleges that “Crew’s office knew what the star football player had done” but he was allowed to play in a state championship game. After the controversy erupted, Crew put the varsity football players at the school on probation and fired the coaches. He vowed to fire 21 employees who didn’t report the crime.

The Miami New Times article says, “Despite the impressive display of authority, Crew’s reaction to the Northwestern affair is much like his response to scandals that plagued him in … New York: too little too late.” The story accused one of Crew’s direct reports of at the time of trying to interfere with the criminal investigation into employees accused of covering up the crime.

In Oregon, where Crew worked as the state’s chief education officer, he made trips that had nothing to do with his job. The Oregonian wrote, “Most of that travel had nothing to do with his $280,000-a-year job. Instead, again and again, he flew first-class to give speeches, often for pay, to audiences drawn by his charisma and the national reputation he built when he ran New York City and Miami schools.”

An audit of Medgar Evers College found that $32,421 in tax levy funds were spent furnishing Crew’s residence and $2,088 was charged to the college’s corporate credit card to pay Crew’s personal bills.

Crew responded to some of these concerns during a virtual press conference Decaturish attended. On April 30, Decaturish published an editorial questioning whether the board should hire Crew, given his problematic past. To read the editorial, click here.
