East Carolina senior starting offensive lineman Cortez Herrin was arrested late Saturday night with two marijuana charges, Pitt County Court records show.

Herrin, 22, was charged with possession with intent to sell or distribute (felony) and possession of marijuana paraphernalia (misdemeanor). He was booked on a $5,000 secured bond.

The Saluda, S.C., native has been suspended indefinitely as a result of the charges.

“We are aware of the matter concerning Cortez Herrin,” ECU coach Mike Houston said in a statement. “He has been suspended indefinitely from all football activities as we continue to gather information.”

Along with Herrin, ECU redshirt sophomore defensive end Dorian Hardy was also recently booked for failing to appear as a result of three misdemeanor driving charges: speeding, reckless driving, and no operator’s license. Hardy has also been suspended indefinitely from the program.

Hardy has appeared in two career games with one tackle. He suffered a season-ending knee injury last preseason and missed all of his redshirt freshman campaign. Hardy was previously arrested in 2018 along with running back Tay Williams for resisting a public officer.

The 6-foot-3, 325-pound Herrin has started for the Pirates the last three years along the offensive line at left guard when healthy. He missed significant time this past season with a knee injury, but still managed to participate in six games, including five starts.

Herrin was granted a medical hardship for his freshman season when he only appeared in one game during the 2016 campaign, allowing him an extra year of eligibility. He is entering his redshirt senior season with the Pirates as a result.

Marijuana is legal for adults in 11 states: Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Alaska, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan, Maine, Vermont and Massachusetts. Medicinal marijuana is also legal in 19 more states. Marijuana isn’t legal for recreational or medicinal use in North Carolina.

Herrin has been a key member of the Pirates’ offensive line the past few seasons. The South Carolina native has played in 27 career games with 22 starts under his belt. He started 16 games in a row the last two seasons at left guard before being sidelined prior to the Old Dominion game with a knee injury.

Counting Herrin’s return, the Pirates will bring back the majority of their offensive line from this season. Senior starting center Branden Pena has graduated and moved on, but the Pirates are expected to apply for an extra year for senior Fernando Frye, who has experience at guard and center. Left tackle D’Ante Smith and Herrin, both multiple-year starters, are expected to be back in 2020 to anchor the left side of the line. Right guard Sean Bailey (redshirt senior) and right tackle Matt Morgan (redshirt junior) will also return with starting experience next season.

The Pirates also redshirted Peyton Winstead, a player with starting center experience who will be a redshirt sophomore next season. Rising redshirt freshman Noah Henderson also started a few games at right tackle in 2019.

SALT LAKE CITY — Three Utah State University football players, including the team’s starting quarterback, have been charged with misdemeanor drug possession.

Jordan A. Love, 21, Sean Lewis Carter, 23, and Gerold Maurice Bright, 22, all of Logan, were each charged Tuesday in Logan Justice Court with marijuana possession, a class B misdemeanor.

Elani Rice, 20, of Logan, was also charged with marijuana possession and possession of alcohol by a minor, both class B misdemeanors. Rice is on the school’s track and field team.

The incident happened about 11:30 p.m. Saturday at the Millennial Towers, 657 E. 1000 North in Logan, according to court records.

Logan Assistant Police Chief Jeff Simmons said police were called to the student residential housing building on a report of people smoking marijuana in a room. Officers could smell marijuana as soon as they entered the building, he said.

A total of seven people were found in the unit where officers suspected marijuana usage. The group initially declined being drug tested. Police then obtained search warrants and each of the seven occupants gave a urine sample, according to Simmons.

Five people tested positive for marijuana and were issued citations and then released, he said. Two people whose test results were negative were not charged. No additional marijuana was found in the room, the assistant chief said.

All three are scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 30.

“We are aware that citations were issued. We have processes in place, both in student conduct and in athletics, and we’ll follow our procedures, as we do in all cases,” Utah State said in a statement.

Love, a junior, is a three-year starter at quarterback and is one of the most accomplished Aggie signal-callers in school history, ranking second in USU history in passing yards (8,283 yards) and attempts (1,086), third in touchdown passes (57), completions (659) and total offense (8,670 yards) and first in career 300-yard passing games (11). He’s also fourth in completion percentage (.607).

Last week, Love announced he will forgo his senior season and enter the 2020 NFL draft.

Bright, a senior running back, leads the Aggies with 827 rushing yards and eight touchdowns this year while adding 207 receiving yards and another score. Carter is a junior college transfer who has one reception for 17 yards this season.

The Aggies play Kent State in the Frisco Bowl this Friday at 5:30 p.m. MST.

Four Texas Tech football players, including potential starting QB Jett Duffey, were arrested early Sunday morning, according to Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office records found online.

The arrests were first reported by InsideTheRedRaiders.com’s Jarrett Johnson.

The players were all booked into the Lubbock County Jail, according to online records.

Duffey was booked at 4:15 a.m. and charged with criminal mischief.

Three other players –CB Desmon Smith, safety Christian Taylor and WR Quan Shorts — were also arrested on Sunday morning.

Taylor is the only other player with a charge listed (criminal mischief), but all three were booked early Sunday morning. Taylor was booked at 4:48 am, Shorts was booked at 5:08 a.m. and Smith was booked at 8:07 a.m., according to online records.

Texas Tech had an open scrimmage in Midland on Saturday.

Duffey, a Mansfield Legacy graduate and the 2015 SportsDayHS Offensive Player of the Year, has been competing with McLane Carter for the Texas Tech starting QB job. After redshirting his first season in Lubbock, Duffey was suspended by Texas Tech for the spring and summer of 2017 after a Title IX hearing panel sided with a woman who alleged that Duffey had sex with when she was too incapacitated to consent. A grand jury ultimately decided there was not enough cause to criminally prosecute the case.

We’ll have more on this story as it becomes available.
