ST. GEORGE, Utah (ABC4 News) —  The man allegedly shot in a closet of his home by his roommate at an apartment complex in St. George Tuesday night has been identified as Jamal “Tank” Goodman, a former football player at Dixie State University, according to university officials.

“We are saddened to learn of the passing of former Dixie State football student-athlete Jamal “Tank” Goodman. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, teammates, and coaches through this difficult time,” according to the Dixie State Athletic’s Facebook page.

Officers with the St. George Police Department tell ABC4 News the initial call came in at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday on reports of self-inflicted gunshot wound at the Legacy Ridge Apartments at 1990 East and 514 South. Authorities located an adult male on scene with an injury to his chest.

Police said Tommy Bradshaw Jr., 32, was on scene and admitted to officers he had shot and killed his roommate.

Bradshaw told police he had been in the residence when the victim returned home and hit his bedroom door loudly, according to police. The suspect told police he retrieved a handgun from his closet, left the room to seek out his roommate, located him in a closet and shot him.

Bradshaw has been charged with first degree murder. He remains in custody and is scheduled to make an initial appearance in 5th District Court Friday at 1:30 p.m.

A 20-year old Colorado State football player was going door-to-door at his part-time roofing job in Loveland, Colorado, when he was ordered to the ground at gunpoint by a 65-year old resident in the neighborhood.  Loveland Police told 9News.com there is no evidence that the player, or his 27-year old co-worker, did anything wrong when Scott Gudmundsen called police and said there were two “Antifa guys” in neighborhood that he was going out to “confront” them.

When police arrived, Gundmundsen was dressed in fatigues and holding the two roofing company employees on the ground at gunpoint.

Gundmundsen was arrested and charged with two counts of felony menacing and two counts of false imprisonment.

Police have not made the names of the victims public, nor has Colorado State confirmed the identity of the football player. A letter was sent to CSU students on Friday night to address the incident, signed by Colorado State President Joyce McConnell, athletic director Joe Parker and football coach Steve Addazio.

“Our student is a young man of color, while the perpetrator is white,” a portion of the letter said, via 9News. “Regardless of what investigators learn or reasons the perpetrator gives, we know this: Our student got up Thursday morning, worked out with his team, then showered, dressed, and went to work. Hours later, he was facing a stranger with a gun and hearing police sirens that had been inexplicably called on him. Given what we have seen happening in cities across this county, we know all too well that this encounter could have proceeded very differently.”

Both Loveland Police and Colorado State University have expressed their concern for the victims’ well-being and indicated that the full range of support services will be made available to help them process the scary incident in the weeks and months to come. Gundmundsen is scheduled to be in court on June 18 and a man who identified himself as the perpetrator’s son has offered an apology while noting his father is “currently undergoing treatment at a mental health facility.”

“Our sincerest thoughts go out to the two salesmen and we apologize to them and their families for the actions of our father and wish them well,” Scott Gundmundsen’s son, Stanley Gundmundsen,  wrote in a message to 9News.

An unidentified Colorado State football player was placed at gunpoint by a 65-year-old man who wrongly accused him of being a member of Antifa, the nebulous far-left movement President Donald Trump has with minimal evidence blamed for inciting violence during recent nationwide protests.

Scott Gudmundsen called police on the Colorado State player and the player’s part-time coworker, then told them to get to the ground and pointed a gun at them, according to a report from 9News.com.

Gundmundsen was arrested and charged with two counts of felony menacing and two counts of false imprisonment.

His son, Stanley Gundmundsen, has since apologized for his father’s actions.

“Our sincerest thoughts go out to the two salesmen,” he told 9News. “We apologize to them and their families for the actions of our father and wish them well.”

Accusations of extremist activity on the right and left have been widespread over the past few weeks as protests against police brutality have in some regions been accompanied by violent sideshows and looting. As tensions ratcheted up, Trump last week blamed Antifa for the clashes and vowed to designate the network, which is considered more shared political idea than centralized organization, a domestic terrorist group. Antifa is short for “anti-fascist.”

The presidential pressure campaign has raised the profile of Antifa and perhaps inspired the president’s base to hunt out possible perpetrators.

Colorado State sent out a letter to its student body Friday night detailing the incident with its football player, writing, “Regardless of what investigators learn or reasons the perpetrator gives, we know this: Our student got up Thursday morning, worked out with his team, then showered, dressed, and went to work. Hours later, he was facing a stranger with a gun and hearing police sirens that had been inexplicably called on him.”

Weekly Pulse: Protests continue in the wake of George Floyd’s death and many professional athletes remain at the forefront of the fight for justice and change.

USA TODAY

A Colorado State football player was held at gunpoint Thursday, and the man accused of doing so was arrested.

The man faces felony charges after calling police and saying there were two men wearing masks near his home. He said he was armed and was going to go confront them, according to 9News.com. The caller said he thought the two were members of the anti-fascist political group Antifa.

Officers responded and found Scott Gudmundsen dressed in fatigues and brandishing a rifle while holding two men on the ground at gunpoint. They arrested him on suspicion of felony menacing and false imprisonment at 6:14 p.m. Thursday in the 2400 block of Dawn Court.

The two men in their 20s were roofing salesmen wearing polo shirts with the logo of their employers and surgical masks going house-to-house following a recent hail storm. Both are in their 20s.

Colorado State sent out an email to its community after the incident on Friday signed by president Joyce McConnell, athletic director Joe Parker and football coach Steve Addazio.

“Our student is a young man of color, while the perpetrator is white. Given what we have seen happening in cities across this county, we know all too well that this encounter could have proceeded very differently.”

The two men were not physically harmed in the incident, nor were they charged by police.

Football players returned to campus this week to begin voluntary workouts at Canvas Stadium.

“This young man is precious to us, contributing to our campus many in many ways: as an athlete, as a leader, and as a thoughtful student,” the letter from Colorado State stated.

Gudmundsen was later released on bond and is scheduled for a first appearance in Larimer County Court at 8:30 a.m. Thursday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A grand jury indicted two former Ohio State football players on Friday on charges of rape and kidnapping after authorities said they held a woman against her will and raped her earlier this month.

Defensive backs Amir Riep and Jahsen Wint were kicked off the team last week after their Feb. 12 arrest. The indictment was announced by Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien, who said each man faces 33 years in prison and registration as a sex offender if convicted.

Both previously pleaded not guilty to preliminary charges. Their next hearing is March 6. Attorneys for both say their clients are innocent.
Riep spoke with officers without a lawyer and passed a polygraph examination, his lawyer, Dan Sabol, said in a statement Friday.

“In a contest of credibility, Amir has done everything possible to prove his innocence,” Sabol said. “If there is a silver lining to this indictment, it is that he will have the opportunity to prove his innocence in a court of law.”

Sam Shamansky, representing Wint, said his client will take a polygraph under any conditions, including one administered by the FBI or the State Highway Patrol.

“He is ready and eager to defend himself against these false allegations,” Shamansky said Friday afternoon.

The woman told police that on Feb. 4 she started having consensual sex with Riep before Wint came into the room and both forced her into sex.

After several minutes, they stopped and Riep told the woman that she needed to say what happened was “consensual on a video recording while laughing at her,” according to police. Riep then told the woman she needed to shower before he drove her back to her home.

Officials said in court that police have the video recording.

State police will be making an announcement this morning in the case of Peter Manfredonia, accused of killing two men and assaulting a third, and holding a fourth man hostage in Connecticut and kidnapping a woman who he brought to New Jersey in late May.

Manfredonia has been held without bond in the Washington County Detention Center in Maryland since he surrendered May 27 to police during an extensive manhunt in the state.

State police will discuss the list of charges expected to be filed against the 23-year-old University of Connecticut student who grew up in Newtown at a press conference at 7 a.m. at Troop C in Tolland.

Manfredonia, an accomplished football player and track athlete at Newtown High School where he graduated in 2015, is a senior at the UConn, where he is a finance and mechanical engineering student.

He was living off campus prior to the crime spree that started the morning of May 22 when he allegedly killed 62-year-old Theodore DeMers in Willington and seriously injured a second Willington resident who police said tried to intervene.

Two days later, a third Willington man reported being held captive by Manfredonia, who stole his guns, food, supplies and his truck during a home invasion, according to police.

A few hours after that, police recovered the stolen truck in Derby, setting off an extensive search that led authorities to a Roosevelt Drive home about a mile away. Police said video surveillance showed Manfredonia walking “directly” toward Nicholas Eisele’s home between 5 and 6 a.m. Sunday. Eisele also graduated Newtown High in 2015 and was described by police as an “acquaintance” of Manfredonia.

By the time police arrived, Manfredonia had allegedly shot Eisele in the head and fled and kidnapped Eisele’s girlfriend in her 2016 Volkswagen Jetta. The woman and the car were recovered later Sunday in New Jersey. Police said the woman was unharmed and returned to Connecticut where she was interviewed by investigators.

Investigators tracked his whereabouts to Pennsylvania and then Maryland where he gave up peacefully on May 27. A spokesperson for his family said that Manfredonia has mental health issues but has never been violent.

Manfredonia waived extradition to Connecticut in a Maryland court the day after his capture. He could also be facing federal charges in the kidnapping of Eisele’s girlfriend who police said Manfredonia brought across state lines.

Texas State is launching an investigation into men’s head basketball coach Danny Kaspar, who has been accused by two former players of repeatedly hurling racist remarks to the team.

According to former point guard Jaylen Shead, Kaspar said that his players would run faster if a “brown man with a [turban] and an AK-47” was there, that a European player needed to improve or he would be deported and that Shead once was “running like the cops are behind him.”

Shead transferred to Washington State last season after two years at Texas State.

“For me, the experience was shocking,” Shead tweeted. “I could overlook the way coach Kaspar treated players in most regards. I could overlook the lies he fed us to get us there and keep us there. I could overlook the way he disregarded the rules and our health. But I could not turn away from the many racially insensitive things that were said to me and other teammates.

“These things happened so much on a daily bases [sic], we became numb as it was normal.”

Kaspar, 65, has been at Texas State since 2013, previously serving as head coach at Stephen F. Austin for 13 years.

“I personally find these allegations deeply troubling,” athletic director Larry Teis said in a statement. “I, and the entire Department of Athletics staff, take the concerns expressed by our former student-athletes very seriously. At my request, the university has launched a formal investigation through the Office of Equal Opportunity and Title IX. It is our top priority to fully cooperate with the investigation.”

Shead, inspired to speak out by the nationwide protests following George Floyd’s death, said Kaspar would tell black players to “chase that chicken” when the coach wanted them to run faster, and told those struggling academically that they would eventually work at Popeyes.

Former Texas state player Alex Peacock supported Shead’s allegations, saying players stayed silent because they feared the consequences to their basketball careers.

“There is no embellishment in what he said,” Peacock told ESPN. “The first time I heard him tell somebody to ‘chase that bucket of chicken,’ I’m like, ‘Hold on. Being a player, it’s hard to come out when you’re in it, when you’re playing, because you don’t know what the ramifications will be.”

According to Peacock, Kaspar also allegedly told players he could utter slang derived from the N-word, used by players.

“He told the black players that if you can use it, I can use it,” Peacock said. “That’s one of the ones where you’re like, ‘OK … no.’ Those are two different meanings than when we use it.”

The NCAA had a chance to do the right thing on Friday and, in a stunning turn of events, completely missed the mark.

Who saw that one coming?

The punishment that the Committee on Infractions handed down to Oklahoma State on Friday, a one-year postseason ban to go along with scholarship reductions and myriad recruiting sanctions, was wrong and should be utterly terrifying for the other programs that found themselves caught up in the FBI’s investigation into college basketball corruption.

Oklahoma State faced a single Level I violation. It was an unethical conduct charge levied at former assistant coach Lamont Evans, who accepted at least $18,150 in bribes from financial advisors in exchange for peddling influence over one player from Oklahoma State and one player from South Carolina, where Evans was coaching before accepting a job on Brad Underwood’s staff in the spring of 2016. Evans was also accused of giving Jeffery Carroll $300.

That’s it.

Evans provided no competitive advantage for Oklahoma State, unless you consider the $300 he paid to Carroll — who was already on the roster and suspended for three games as a result — a competitive advantage. Evans was lining his pockets. He was not doing this to benefit the basketball program. Technically speaking, the players Evans claimed to have the power of persuasion over were the victims of the crimes that got him sentenced to three months in prison on federal bribery charges. He steered them to financial advisors that were willing to shell out bribe money. He knew nothing about the people that he was telling these players to invest their money with. One of the men Evans accepted bribes from was Marty Blazer, who sparked this entire investigation to try and avoid prison when he was caught by the SEC embezzling millions of dollars from clients.

That’s where Evans was guiding players who trusted him.

The players were the victims.

Despite that, Oklahoma State was still hit with a one-year postseason ban. Evans has been gone for three years. Carroll has been gone for two. Neither the current head coach — Mike Boynton — or the head coach the violations were committed under — Brad Underwood — were mentioned in the Notice of Allegations.

“There were no recruiting or other major violations on the part of the institution,” Oklahoma State said in a statement in November. “There are no allegations involving current student-athletes or coaching staff.”

None of that mattered to the Committee on Infractions.

They dropped the hammer on Oklahoma State, effectively neutering what was the most anticipated OSU season since Marcus Smart returned for his sophomore year. So much for seeing Cade Cunningham play in the NCAA tournament. Hell, we may not see Cunningham play for Oklahoma State, period. He was offered the chance to join the G League prospect pathway program, reportedly for as much money as Jalen Green. If he’s not going to play meaningful games at Oklahoma State, maybe he reconsiders the offer.

“Whatever the best option is for him we’re going to support 100 percent without any reservations,” Boynton said.

This gets to the core of the problem when it comes to NCAA enforcement: They far too often punish players and coaches for violations that they took no part in. What did Cunningham, or anyone else on Oklahoma State’s roster, have to do with Lamont Evans accepting bribes from a white collar felon that had been flipped by the FBI? How was anyone associated with the Oklahoma State athletic department supposed to prevent one assistant coach from accepting those bribes?

“A postseason ban for a bunch of kids that were 15, 16 years old when a lot of this was going on? It’s completely, completely out of bounds,” Boynton said.

He’s not wrong.

A postseason ban is total overkill.

That is the most infuriating part is that the NCAA was actually able to punish the man responsible. That’s not usually the case. Evans received a 10-year show-cause penalty from the NCAA in addition to a three month jail sentence for pleading guilty. His coaching career is effectively over. He’ll never be a Division I head coach. He’ll never coach at a level where he is able to earn a couple hundred grand as an assistant. The person entirely at fault for this situation had his life blown up.

And Oklahoma State still got a postseason ban despite the fact that, as Larry Parkinson of the Committee on Infractions said, “the institution fully cooperated from the moment they learned about the circumstances.”

That should be a major red flag for everyone else caught up in this investigation.

USC, Arizona and Auburn all had an assistant coach plead guilty to similar charges as Evans. Louisville committed their violations while they were on probation from the last scandal the program was embroiled in. Oklahoma State faced one Level I violation. Kansas faces five, and they’ve made quite clear they aren’t going to be as cooperative.

If the Committee on Infractions has set the bar here, everyone else better be ready to catch the book that gets thrown at them.

The university also must prohibit unofficial visits for three additional weeks during the fall of 2020, 2021 and/or 2022.A prohibition of men’s basketball telephone recruiting for a one-week period during the 2020-21 academic year (self-imposed by the university). The university also must prohibit telephone recruiting for six additional weeks during the probation period.A reduction in the number of men’s basketball recruiting person days by 12 during the 2019-20 academic year (self-imposed by the university). The university also must reduce the number of recruiting person days by five during the 2020-21 academic year.A 10-year show-cause order for the former associate head coach. During that period, any NCAA member school employing him must restrict him from any athletically related duties unless it shows cause why the restrictions should not apply.A prohibition of the men’s basketball staff from participating in off-campus evaluations for three consecutive days during the summer evaluation periods in 2020 (self-imposed by the university). The Oklahoma State University Department of Athletics has since released a statement, saying it will file an immediate appeal of the NCAA penalties assessed to the men’s basketball program on Friday. The deadline for filing the appeal is June 20. It will be heard by the Infractions Appeal Committee, the final step in the NCAA infractions process, according to OSU:”The University is stunned by the severity of the penalties and strongly disagrees with them. The penalties do not align with the facts and are unfair and unjust. “The NCAA agreed with OSU that Lamont Evans acted alone and for his own personal gain. Evans was terminated by OSU on Sept. 28, 2017, within 72 hours of learning of allegations against him.”The NCAA also agreed that OSU did not benefit in recruiting, commit a recruiting violation, did not play an ineligible player, and did not display a lack of institutional control. As the report documents, OSU cooperated throughout the process, which lasted two years. “The NCAA appears to have made an arbitrary decision in the sanctions applied to the institution for the egregious actions committed by a former coach that did not result in any benefit for the University.”
