Former Texas Christian University standout and NFL quarterback Trevone Boykin is headed to prison, sentenced to three years behind bars after pleading guilty to four charges Wednesday.

In December 2019 Boykin was arrested on two misdemeanor theft charges from October, one where he was accused of duping at least two people into paying him for collegiate memorabilia he’d posted for sale on Instagram and then not delivering the merchandise and then another for staying in a hotel in Arlington where he left without paying the bill.

The assault and tampering charges are related to a family violence case from the year before that cost him his job with the Seattle Seahawks. In that case, Boykin was formally charged in September 2018 with aggravated assault for allegedly attacking his girlfriend and breaking her jaw in his home in March of that year.

Boykin was on the Seahawks practice roster at the time but was cut after the alleged assault was reported. He released a statement then saying the story was false and that he wasn’t involved in the altercation.

On Wednesday, Boykin pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to three years in prison for the felonies and 180 days in the Tarrant County Jail on the misdemeanor theft cases.

“Mr. Boykin has failed to take responsibility for any of his assaultive and criminal behavior up until this point. The victim in this case sustained a long-standing relationship of abuse by Mr. Boykin and, along with our office, feels his prison sentence is vindication for what she endured and the consequences he was able to avoid in the past because of his ability on the football field,” said prosecutor Allena Bangs.

It is not yet clear if Boykin will serve the sentences concurrently or consecutively.

Boykin was arrested in 2017 in Dallas on misdemeanor charges of public intoxication and marijuana possession after he was riding in a car where the driver crashed, though the case was later dismissed. In 2016, he pleaded no contest to resisting arrest after originally facing a felony charge of assaulting an officer, stemming from an incident shortly before the 2015 Alamo Bowl in San Antonio. He was suspended for that bowl game and was sentenced to a year of deferred adjudication probation.

In 2014 Boykin was a finalist for a number of honors including the Heisman, O’Brien, Manning, Unitas and Walter Camp awards and trophies. Despite that, he was not selected in the 2016 NFL Draft and later signed with the Seahawks that summer. He went on to play in five games that season before being bumped to the practice squad in 2017.

Former Texas Christian University standout and NFL quarterback Trevone Boykin is in the Tarrant County Jail accused of selling TCU memorabilia online but never delivering the merchandise to the buyer, according to court records.

Records from the Tarrant County Jail show Boykin was arrested this week on two charges of misdemeanor theft of property from $100 to $750. Records also show he was wanted in Arlington for misdemeanor alleged theft of service between $100 and $750 that occurred on Oct. 29.

Arlington police told NBC 5 Tuesday that Boykin checked into a hotel on North Watson Road under an alias and that a manager at the hotel “canceled the reservation due to alleged fraudulent credit card use.” The manager told police Boykin left the hotel without paying for the room, which brought about the misdemeanor theft of service charge.

An arrest warrant affidavit obtained by NBC 5 Tuesday alleges Boykin duped at least two people into paying him for collegiate memorabilia he’d posted for sale on Instagram. The document alleges one man paid $250 for a TCU jersey on Jan. 1, 2019 and another paid $315 for a TCU jersey and a ring on Jan. 9, 2019. The money was sent to Boykin’s bank account via Venmo, according to police, but the buyers said they never received the memorabilia from Boykin and that they never received a refund.

As of this writing Boykin is being held in the Tarrant County Corrections Center (Green Bay Facility) on $1,250 bond for the misdemeanors. It’s not clear if Boykin has obtained an attorney.

The former athlete is also being held on another $100,000 in bonds related to an alleged family violence case from 2018 that cost him his job with the Seattle Seahawks.

Jail records show Boykin being held on the misdemeanors as well as three other charges — aggravated assault of a family member with a weapon, tampering with a witness in a family violence case and aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.

In September 2018 Boykin was formally charged with aggravated assault for allegedly attacking his girlfriend and breaking her jaw in his home in March of that year. Boykin was on the Seahawks practice roster at the time but was cut after the alleged assault was reported.

Boykin then released the following statement in March 2018.

“I understand the Seahawks decision to release me. The story that was reported casts a bad light on the organization and on me. I want to be clear that the story is false. The police have taken statements from the accuser, another witness and me. All of these statements confirm that I was not involved in the physical altercation. This woman has lied about me and it has cost me my job. I know guilt by association is real. This person has fabricated a story and I am suffering the consequences. I will let the legal system run its course and I know I will be vindicated.”

Former Seahawks and TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin was arrested Wednesday on charges of aggravated assault with serious bodily injury, according to a release from the Mansfield (Texas) Police Department (via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram).

The Seahawks released the backup quarterback Tuesday, hours after he was accused of domestic violence by his longtime girlfriend, Shabrika Bailey.

Dallas’ WFAA-TV reported that Bailey said he choked her to the point of blacking out last week and that her mouth had to be wired shut after he broke her jaw in two places.

Per the police release:

“On March 21, 2018 Mansfield Police Officers were called by Parkland Hospital staff in Dallas, Texas regarding an alleged assault which was said to have occurred in the city of Mansfield, Texas. Officers responded and met with the victim who provided a statement about an assault that occurred in 2300 block of Richmond Circle in Mansfield.”

Bailey, who said the pair have been in a relationship since they were in high school, told WFAA an argument began at his home in Mansfield, Texas, after she wouldn’t let him see a text message.

“So he goes into a choke. I remember him choking me, and I’m trying to calm him down. And I just couldn’t. And I blacked out. I just couldn’t calm him down at all,” Bailey alleged.

“The pressure was just hard. The pressure got hard to where I just remember just collapsing completely. And I just woke up in a puddle of blood on the kitchen floor. My whole right side was full of blood on the kitchen floor.”

Bailey said Boykin eventually drove her to Dallas Regional Medical Center, but when the staff began questioning them separately about the incident, Boykin is alleged to have left the hospital and didn’t return. She said she had to be airlifted to a different hospital because she was struggling to breathe from a swollen and constricted airway.

Before Wednesday’s charges, police confirmed to WFAA that Boykin is under investigation.

Boykin released a statement after the Seahawks released him, calling Bailey’s story “false.”

Mansfield police detectives say they found surveillance video in Boykin’s home that showed “what appeared to be an assault that occurred inside the residence,” a release said, via WFAA.

Boykin, 24, was arrested in April 2017 and charged with public intoxication and marijuana possession after a car he was in crashed into a Dallas bar and injured eight people.

Bailey now says she was driving the vehicle that night and the reason she crashed is because Boykin was hitting her, which caused her to lose control of the car. She said she covered for him at his request because his football career would be lost.

She said he also told her to say she injured herself last week with the story that she either got jumped or fell.

As a senior at TCU, Boykin was suspended for the Alamo Bowl after he was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and public intoxication after an altercation at a San Antonio bar at around 2 a.m. two days before the game.
