ISTANBUL, Turkey – The father of Turkish NBA player Enes Kanter has been acquitted on charges of belonging to a terror group, Turkish media reported Friday, June 19, as the basketball player hailed his father’s release.

Mehmet Kanter, a university professor, was charged in 2018 with membership to the group that Ankara blames for a 2016 failed coup.

Appearing in court in Tekirdag, northwestern Turkey on Thursday, he rejected any ties to the movement of US-based Muslim preacher Fethullah Gulen, the Birgun newspaper reported on its website.

The elder Kanter had been briefly detained in 2017. His passport was confiscated after his release, preventing him from travelling overseas.

His 28-year-old son Enes, who plays with the Boston Celtics and is facing similar accusations, took to Twitter on Friday to say his father had been released.

“Wow! I could cry,” wrote Kanter.

“MY DAD HAS BEEN RELEASED! “This is due to the pressure we have put on the Turkish regime.”

Kanter said that his father had faced a “Kangaroo court” and been accused of “being a criminal just because he is my dad.”

The Celtics center is an outspoken critic of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and has expressed support for Gulen.

Turkey blames the attempted overthrow of Erdogan in 2016 on the president’s former ally-turned-foe Gulen, but the preacher vehemently denies the claims.

Enes was detained in 2017 at a Romanian airport after being told his Turkish passport had been canceled – a move that the player said was due to his political views.

Kanter was allowed to leave a few hours later. – Rappler.com

A Turkish court has accepted an indictment charging the father of NBA player Enes Kanter with “membership in a terror group”, the country’s official news agency reported.

Enes Kanter is best known in NZ for his friendship with Kiwi basketball star and former Oklahoma City teammate Steven Adams, who together formed a centre-court duo known as the ‘Stache Brothers’.

Prosecutors planned to seek the conviction of his father Mehmet Kanter. They were after a prison term of five to 10 years at trial, Anadolu Agency said.

The OKC centre pairing were friends on and off the court.

It’s unclear when the trial in western Tekirdag province would begin.

Enes Kanter, who now plays for the New York Knicks, is a follower of a US-based Turkish cleric who the government accuses of masterminding a failed military coup in 2016.

Cleric Fethullah Gulen has denied the allegation, but tens of thousands of people suspected of ties to his network have been arrested or fired.

The elder Kanter, a professor, was purged from public service after the coup attempt and detained for five days last summer.

Anadolu said the indictment alleges he contacted some 120 suspects with alleged links to Gulen, including dozens who were said to have communicated through an encrypted messaging application.

Enes Kanter has been a vocal critic of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. His Turkish passport was cancelled last year.

Prosecutors charged him in December with insulting the president in a series of tweets. They want to try him in absentia and have him sentenced to more than four years in prison, if he is convicted.

“Keep my family, innocent people in your prayers,” the basketball player tweeted Monday with the hashtag #DictatorErdogan. His Twitter account is withheld in Turkey.

Under a state of emergency declared in the aftermath of the coup, Turkey has arrested more than 50,000 and sacked some 110,000 people alleged to have infiltrated state institutions for Gulen. The government said the crackdown was needed to fight alleged acts of terror.

A 29-year-old man appeared in court on Wednesday charged in connection with images — including one of a snowman holding a rocket launcher — displayed at a dissident republican office in Londonderry.

Patrick Joseph Barr is accused of displaying or allowing to be displayed offensive posters in the front window of a building occupied by the group known as Saoradh in Chamberlain Street in the city last year.

Barr from Sackville Street denied the offences.

He is charged that on October 5, 2017, at Chamberlain Street, being the person responsible for the premises, he caused or permitted the display of an offensive poster containing a graphic poster depicting a male nude with a gun and literature with reference to a deceased police officer with intent to provoke a breach of the peace or by which a breach of the peace or public disorder was likely.

The defendant is further charged that on October 26 of last year, being the person responsible for the premises, he caused or permitted the display of a snowman holding a rocket-propelled grenade launcher with the message ‘Wishing you an explosive Christmas’ with intent to provoke a breach of the peace or by which a breach of the peace or public disorder was likely.

A police officer told District Judge Barney McElholm that he believed that he could connect the defendant to both of the charges.

A defence solicitor told the court that the basis of the charges was that when the defendant was stopped and searched under the Justice and Security Act, the police found on him a rates bill and a tenancy agreement for the Chamberlain Street premises.

The solicitor said the charges would be contested and the defendant was released on unconditional police bail until February 2.

The maximum sentence for the offence is a six-month jail sentence and or a fine of up to £5,000.
