There’s been another storyline that’s dominated the West Virginia football program the past couple of days.

Early Tuesday afternoon, West Virginia football player Kerry Martin penned a lengthy statement that he posted on Twitter in which he alleged the mistreatment of himself and his teammates by WVU assistant Vic Koenning.  A short time later, the Mountaineers placed the defensive coordinator on administrative leave.

Tuesday night, West Virginia released a letter from head football coach Neal Brown.  In it, Brown describes himself as “sick about today’s events,” writing that he “first learned about Kerry’s stated concerns via Twitter.” That’s noteworthy because the safety claimed in his statement that he had meetings with Brown regarding Koenning’s alleged mistreatment.

Wednesday evening, Koenning issued a statement of apology via his Twitter account.

I respect Kerry Martin’s right to share that some of my words and actions impacted him. I care deeply for KJ and, when given the opportunity to speak directly, am optimistic we can find common ground. In the interim, I want to offer my sincere apology to both KJ and the entire WVU Family.

I never intended anything I said or did to offend or be insensitive. But KJ’s tweet reminded me that sometimes intent is not always clearly communicated. I’ve devoted the last 30 plus years of my life to serving young men through coaching. I’ve always tried to see things from the perspective of others. I’m not perfect – but I’m also not the person many on social media have painted me to be. I’m still learning every day and this is an opportunity for me to listen, learn and improve.

Over the past several days, some of our players have asked me why I haven’t spoken out publicly against racism and social injustice. Coach Brown and our administration addressed those important issues on behalf of our program and I fully supported their messages – then and now. At the time, I did not see the need to issue a separate statement. Again, I recognize that this only takes into account my perspective and not that of the players I am leading. Of course I stand against racism and social injustice of any kind. I hope my players know that already, but I proudly say it now. There is no place for that any time, anywhere or any place.

I look forward to fully cooperating with WVU’s independent investigation by sharing what is in my heart and getting to the truth. I will have no further comment out of respect for that process. We will get through this together and be stronger as a team for it.

In announcing Koenning had been placed on administrative leave, athletic director Shane Lyons stated that “the department will work with the appropriate parties to conduct a thorough investigation into these allegations.” Brown subsequently confirmed that an independent investigation had been launched.

Koenning has been with Brown the past five seasons.  Four of those were spent at Troy along with the 2019 season at WVU.

NEW ORLEANS — A Tulane University football player was arrested Sunday morning for attacking a young woman in East Baton Rouge Parish.

Police say Denisha Coleman, just 70 pounds and 5’1” tall, was punched in the face early Sunday morning by 185-pound Tyler Judson.

The pair were outside of a Waffle House in Zachary. One punch, a witness said, flipped Coleman face-first onto the pavement.

Coleman’s mother, Desiree Coleman, said the two did not know each other, and her daughter didn’t pick a fight. Still, she ended up hospitalized, in intensive care, with horrific injuries. Four days after the punch, both of her eyes are still swollen shut.

“She had multiple facial fractures. She has to have surgery, but it’s not clear what the surgery’s going to be until some of the swelling goes down,” said Desiree Coleman.

Desiree met her daughter at the hospital, where a nurse was able to bring her back to see Denisha.

“I said ‘Don’t worry baby.’ I said ‘Don’t worry about what I see. You’re going to be ok.’ I said, ‘But I just need to step out and talk to the nurse.’ But I needed to get out because it was that horrible,” the mother said.

Judson played in four games as a safety for Tulane University football. He was booked on battery charges two hours after the attack.

Judson later posted bail and was released.

Tulane Athletics wrote in a statement, “As additional information has now become available concerning his arrest earlier this week, Tulane football student-athlete Tyler Judson has been dismissed from the football program after initially being suspended following his arrest. Tulane will continue to hold our student-athletes, coaches and staff to the highest of standards.”

The Colemans want to see him prosecuted. Denisha has undergone CT scans and X-rays, and will likely need surgery for eye fractures and a broken nose.

It will also cost this high school senior her walk across the stage this Friday.

“I just know that my baby was an innocent person that didn’t deserve this,” said Desiree.

An investigation is ongoing.

A fight at a Waffle House in Louisiana landed a Tulane University football player in jail and a teenage girl in a hospital, police said.

Zachary Police Chief David McDavid told The Advocate the early Monday morning fight that led to the arrest of Tyler Judson, a defensive back on the university’s football team, originated from an argument about a conversation on Instagram.

It is not clear whose relationship the argument was about, but McDavid said it appears to involve Judson and the girl he is accused of punching. Police did not identify the victim, but WWL-TV reported her to be a high school student. Her mother told the news outlet her daughter has many facial fractures and will likely need surgery around her eye and for a broken nose.

The woman also told the television station her daughter, who is now recovering at home, did not know Judson.

The fight started after a group of people went to a Waffle House in Zachary after a party, McDavid said. Officers arrested Judson after interviewing several witnesses, and determining he allegedly punched someone in the face, the Advocate reported. Another juvenile was also arrested on battery charges.

“As additional information has now become available concerning his arrest earlier this week, Tulane football student-athlete Tyler Judson has been dismissed from the football program after initially being suspended following his arrest,” Tulane Athletics said in a statement. “Tulane will continue to hold our student-athletes, coaches and staff to the highest of standards.”

Judson was released on a $7,500 bond after his arrest on battery charges. It was not immediately clear if he had a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.

MCDONOUGH, Ga. — A Tulane University basketball player who recently declared for the NBA draft is charged with murder and other counts in a Georgia slaying.

Teshaun Hightower, who led the Green Wave in scoring last season, was booked into jail Saturday on multiple charges, including murder and aggravated assault, Henry County Jail records show.

He was one of six people wanted in connection with an April 8 homicide in Stockbridge, Georgia, Henry County police said in a Facebook post Friday. Police spokesman Capt. Randy Lee told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the victim, Devante Anthony Long, died from gunshot wounds after he was taken to a hospital.

Jail records show that five of the six men are now in police custody, including Hightower’s brother, Jeffrey Hightower.

Teshaun Hightower’s lawyer, Averick Walker, told ESPN that Jeffrey Hightower fired the gun in self defense.

“The victim came out of the house with a gun in his hand and turned his weapon toward Teshaun to shoot him. That’s why the victim was shot himself,” Walker said.

On the day of the shooting, Teshaun Hightower posted a tweet that said “God protect my people.”

Tulane “immediately dismissed” Hightower from the basketball program after learning about his arrest, athletic director Troy Dannen said in a statement reported by news outlets.

Hightower, 22, said he was entering the NBA draft pool on April 18, just 10 days after Long’s death. In his announcement on Twitter, the junior guard noted he planned to maintain the option of returning to school with a year of eligibility left.

The 6-foot-5 Hightower, a native of Lithonia, Georgia, averaged 15.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game during the 2019-20 season, his only one at Tulane. He played the previous two seasons at Georgia before transferring.

Prior to college, Hightower attended Mt. Zion Prep near Baltimore.

Jail records show he was scheduled to appear in court on Sunday.
