A University of Hawaii football player returning from spring break was arrested Monday by state special agents in connection with violating the state’s mandatory 14-day traveler quarantine rules.

Venasio “Solo” Vaipulu, 21, left his designated quarantine location almost daily, according to a news release from the Hawaii COVID-19 Joint Information Center.

The UH junior, who was reported to state authorities by community witnesses, was also charged with  making a false statement to authorities. His bail was set at $4,000.

Vaipulu’s athletic profile says he was named to the Polynesian Player of the Year watch list in 2019.

Another visitor — 18-year-old Makayla Janay Thomas from Victorville, California — was arrested last Thursday after posting photos of herself violating quarantine rules on Instagram, the news release also said.

Thomas arrived on Oahu on May 17 and began posting photos of going to beaches, shopping centers and local eateries on social media. A local community group alerted special agents of her postings.

Thomas was booked and charged, and her bail was set at $2,000, according to the COVID-19 Joint Information Center.

HOUSTON – A senior defensive back for the University of Houston has been indefinitely suspended from the team following his arrest last week for assault on a 60-year-old man.

Ka’Darian Smith, a reserve cornerback for the Cougars, was arrested Nov.6 and charged with a second-degree felony for aggravated assault with serious bodily injury following an alleged attack on Thaddeus Lewis, according to court records.

“We are aware of the serious allegations regarding Ka’Darian Smith,” University of Houston said in a released statement. “He has been suspended indefinitely from the Houston football program. We will have no further comment at this time.”

According to court records, when police officers arrived at the ICON Apartments at 2509 Elgin, they found the victim with severe facial injuries and bleeding profusely. Lewis, who was taken to the hospital, had broken bones in his face, a broken nose, cracked ribs and bleeding in the ear canal.

Smith, 21, was not at the scene initially but returned and was arrested. Court records show that Smith confessed to injuring Lewis, telling officers, “I beat him up.”

The victim told officers he was approached by Smith in the garage and Smith accused him of stealing from his apartment. Lewis said he went down a stairwell and Smith again accused him of stealing. That is when Lewis said he was attacked as Smith punched him in the face several times until he fell, then Smith began kicking in the upper body until the victim blacked out, the court documents said.

Smith appeared in court on Nov.7 and was released on a $20,000 bond.

Smith, who is from Spring, has primarily been a reserve during his four years at UH. The 6-foot-1, 186-pound senior has played in just four games this season and has not been played since Sept. 28 against North Texas. He has just nine tackles on the season.

Smith is set to return to court next month and must have no contact with the victim.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A cornerback for the University of Houston football team has been suspended indefinitely following his arrest for allegedly beating a 60-year-old man unconscious.

Police say 21-year-old Ka’Darian Smith admitted to assaulting Thaddeus Lewis last Wednesday.

Lewis told ABC13 he spent three-and-a-half days in the hospital with a broken nose, cracked ribs and bleeding in his ear canal that has affected his hearing.

The maintenance worker at The Icon Student Apartments on Elgin near the university says he was repairing a door on one of Smith’s suite-mates’ rooms. A few hours later, Smith repeatedly accused him of stealing money. Lewis says Smith confronted him and then hit and kicked him until he blacked out.

“This has never happened to me. I take my work seriously. I never took anything from anybody,” Lewis said.

Police say Smith was arrested and interviewed. He allegedly confessed saying, “I beat him up.”

Smith has been charged with aggravated assault with serious bodily injury. ABC13’s attempts to contact him were not successful. The UH senior from Spring, who has no criminal history, is out of jail on bond.

University of Houston released the following statement:

“We are aware of the serious allegations regarding Ka’Darian Smith. He has been suspended indefinitely from the Houston football program. We will have no further comment at this time.”
