LEXINGTON, Ky. — Police found more than $98,000 and 52 grams of cocaine in the townhome where former Kentucky football player Marcus Walker was arrested in May, according to court records.

Walker, who was dismissed from the football team following his arrest, and his roommate, Tavon Wells, were both charged with trafficking at least 5 pounds of marijuana and 4 grams of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police were dispatched to the apartment on Unity Drive in Lexington just after 11 p.m. on May 23 after a report of a “disorder involving a male and female.” Dispatchers could hear the woman saying she had been hit by the male subject.

The officers arrived to find a window had been broken and glass was lying on the outside of the unit. Walker, 21, answered the door and told the officers Wells, 23, and his girlfriend had just left the apartment after an argument. Walker allowed the officers to enter the apartment to check if there were any other victims needing medical attention.

Police said they found the apartment in a “state of disarray” with furniture and a television strewn across the floor along with marijuana, cash and blood.

Three clear bags “approximately the size of a soccer ball” were found in a utility closet off the living room. An AR-15 rifle belonging to Wells was leaned against a wall in a second-story bedroom.

After obtaining a search warrant for the townhome, officers discovered approximately 52.86 grams of “suspected powder cocaine” in a clear plastic bag in a kitchen cabinet along with digital scales and packaging material.

Cash totaling $70,312 was found in a black bag in a utility room closet. Officers also found $25,000 in a box by a bed in a top-floor bedroom. The evidence record included in the court documents listed all of that money as belonging to Walker in addition to $430 in his pocket. The record lists $2,479 found in a middle-floor bedroom as belonging to Wells.

A native of Lake Wales, Florida, Walker played in 12 of UK’s 13 games as a sophomore last season, mostly on special teams. The reserve safety recorded five tackles in 2017.

Wells was previously found guilty of marijuana trafficking. It was Walker’s first arrest.

UK announced on May 29 Walker had been dismissed from the team and UK coach Mark Stoops would have no additional comment.

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The University of Kentucky student who allegedly accompanied a UK basketball player to a party while armed with a gun was released on bond Monday.

Aaron Steele, 20, was arrested Sunday and charged for misdemeanor fourth-degree assault, dating violence with minor injury, for allegedly striking a woman and throwing her against a wall, according to a police report.

Steele’s arraignment hearing is scheduled for Feb. 22.

Police observed “several bruises” on the victim’s arms and the victim complained of “pain over her whole body.”

Background: Alleged Kentucky basketball player’s bodyguard charged with assault

Steele and the victim, who was not named in the documents, were “in an intimate relationship for approximately six to seven months,” according to the report.

Steele remained a UK student after the school previously investigated whether he was armed at a party in January, an attorney representing Steele told Courier Journal last week. Steele was allegedly accompanying Kentucky basketball player Tai Wynyard, who has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities. UK basketball spokesman Eric Lindsey declined to comment on whether his suspension is related to the allegations.

The Kentucky Interfraternity Council met with fraternity and sorority presidents after Steele allegedly attended the party while armed and was said to be “protecting” Wynyard, and sorority members used a group messaging app to warn each other and identify him.

More on this: UK investigated claim of armed student with basketball player at party

The Group Me message circulated by sorority members in January stated: “there is a guy named Aaron Steel (sic) showing up to parties with the basketball player Tai Wynyard. He showed up last night to our rush party and … had a gun … said he was ‘protecting’ Wynyard. … If you go out tonight and see him DO NOT APPROACH HIM. Share this to EVERY SISTER.”

Steele’s arrest and the alleged January incident appear to have no connection.

UK would not comment about Steele’s specific case when contacted Monday about potential disciplinary measures taken against students who are arrested for such crimes.

“In terms of the range of disciplinary measures, there is not one approach — or one set of measures — that apply,” UK spokesperson Jay Blanton said. “Each case is different. Each involves different circumstances and they are adjudicated with that in mind. The same is true for the path of a disciplinary proceeding. Some of it depends upon what the victim-survivor or accused does in terms of where they report and what path he or she wants to pursue.”

Attorney Abe Mashni, who is representing Steele, said the university found no wrongdoing in its investigation into the January allegations.

“My client is not a bodyguard, for Tai Wynyard or anyone else,” Mashni told Courier Journal in an email. “He’s a student and a kid. It’s important to remember we are talking about eighteen and nineteen-year-old kids. This issue was investigated by the University of Kentucky and no violations of student conduct were found. No criminal charges were filed. This is a non-story. We ask that you respect his privacy while he continues to work toward a degree.”

Mashni indicated he would continue to represent Steele, who was released to his father, Roger Steele, with instructions not to make contact with the alleged victim.

A man identified in a media report as the armed University of Kentucky student who allegedly accompanied a basketball player to a party was arrested Sunday on an unrelated charge.

Aaron Steele, 20, was charged with fourth-degree assault after allegedly striking and throwing a girl he knew against a wall by her throat, according to his arrest citation. Steele caused minor injury to the woman, according to his citation.

Several bruises were observed and she complained of pain throughout her whole body, according to court records.

According to the Courier-Journal, Steele allegedly accompanied UK basketball player Tai Wynyard to a party while carrying a gun last month. UK fraternity and sorority members used a group messaging app to warn each other about Steele, the Courier-Journal reported. Steele allegedly told a sorority member that he was “protecting” Wynyard.

UK has not confirmed any details about an investigation of Steele or his relationship to Wynyard. No charges were filed.

Wynyard, who also has a back injury that prevented him from playing, has been suspended from team activities because of an undisclosed violation of team rules.

Steele remains in the Fayette County Detention Center on the assault charge.

A Laurel man charged with two armed robberies in late 2014 settled his final case in Laurel Circuit Court last week.

Chad Michael Merida, 25, was set for a pretrial conference before Circuit Judge Greg Lay on Jan. 2 and a jury trial on Jan. 18.

Instead, Merida entered a guilty plea to first-degree robbery and waived a formal sentencing hearing later on, opting to have his sentence imposed immediately during that hearing on Jan. 2.

Merida will now serve 11 years for the October 25 robbery of the Saddlebrook  Dollar General Store in which he reportedly threatened store staff with “the use of physical force while armed with a gun and in the course of committing a theft.”

Merida was indicted on that charge in Dec. 2014 as well as another charge in which he robbed the Game Stop store in London. He pled to that charge in early October and received an 11-year sentence.

The court document for the Dollar Store robbery does not indicate whether the two sentences will run at the same time or if Merida will serve one sentence after the other is completed.

The two robberies in London were among a string of armed robberies in which Merida was eventually charged. Those included businesses in Georgia and Florida, for which Merida pled guilty to 11 robberies in Sept. 2015. His official charges under federal statutes were interference with commerce by robbery, according to an announcement released by U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley in Tampa, Florida, after his plea agreement there.

The route that led Merida to a life of crime is not known, although he enjoyed success as a football player at both South Laurel High School and as a walk-on for the University of Kentucky football team in 2012.

Records from the Laurel County Correctional Center’s website indicates that Merida was brought to the London jail on Nov. 3 and remains incarcerated there.
