LEBANON, Ind. (WTHR) – The man accused of driving drunk and killing a Colts player and his Uber driver earlier this month was charged Tuesday in an unrelated crime from last year.

Boone County Prosecuting Attorney Todd J. Meyer charged Manuel Orrego-Savala with felony perjury, felony forgery, felony identity deception and misdemeanor false informing in last year’s case. Meyer says his office prosecuted and convicted a man named Alex Cabrera-Gonsales on Aug. 23, 2017 for driving without ever getting a license, a misdemeanor. Meyer says Cabrera-Gonsales is actually the same person as Orrego-Savala, but gave police a false identity during that arrest and trial.

“A critical component to our state and nation’s public safety is that we have proper identifying information and records of criminal offenders,” Meyer said in a statement. “Inaccurate information puts lives in danger and jeopardizes the proper function of our nation’s criminal justice system as a whole. These cahrges reflect the seriousness of these types of offenses.”

Orrego-Savala was charged last week in Marion County with two counts of failure to remain at the scene of an accident and two counts of causing death while operating a motor vehicle with an ACE of .15 or more. Those charges are connected to the crash that killed Colts player Edwin Jackson and Jackson’s Uber driver. Jeffrey Monroe, Sunday, February 4. He also faces federal immigration charges for illegally coming back into the country after being deported.
