A University of Hawaii football player returning from spring break was arrested Monday by state special agents in connection with violating the state’s mandatory 14-day traveler quarantine rules.

Venasio “Solo” Vaipulu, 21, left his designated quarantine location almost daily, according to a news release from the Hawaii COVID-19 Joint Information Center.

The UH junior, who was reported to state authorities by community witnesses, was also charged with  making a false statement to authorities. His bail was set at $4,000.

Vaipulu’s athletic profile says he was named to the Polynesian Player of the Year watch list in 2019.

Another visitor — 18-year-old Makayla Janay Thomas from Victorville, California — was arrested last Thursday after posting photos of herself violating quarantine rules on Instagram, the news release also said.

Thomas arrived on Oahu on May 17 and began posting photos of going to beaches, shopping centers and local eateries on social media. A local community group alerted special agents of her postings.

Thomas was booked and charged, and her bail was set at $2,000, according to the COVID-19 Joint Information Center.

Former Chicago White Sox pitcher and Atlantic Coast baseball coach Joel Davis has been arrested again on charges involving domestic battery.

Former Atlantic Coast High baseball coach Joel Davis is in the Duval County jail after being charged Wednesday with three misdemeanor counts of domestic battery, violating a protective injunction and resisting an officer without violence.

Davis, 55, has been electronically monitored since Feb. 15 for two other counts of violating a protective order against his estranged wife. Wednesday he was booked into jail shortly before 2 p.m. and was listed as being held in pretrial detention. He has a court appearance scheduled for Thursday at 9 a.m.

The Times-Union has requested the arrest report on the latest charges. Details have not been released.

Davis’ attorney, Lee Lockett, declined comment, telling the Times-Union via email that he didn’t get a chance to review the arrest and booking reports until late Wednesday afternoon and had not yet spoken with his client on the new charges.

Davis has previously been charged with violating injunctions for protection orders issued on behalf of his current wife, who filed for divorce on Jan. 3 after five years of marriage, and another woman eight years ago. His current wife filed for the protective order four days after filing for divorce.

According to the Jan. 7 injunction, his estranged wife said she moved out of their Mastin Cove Road home in September after several instances of violence. She said Davis has been stalking her and calling her multiple times, including 10 times on Dec. 18. She said he came to her apartment multiple times daily and pounded on her door.

She said in the injunction that Davis has threatened to kill her and has a history of domestic violence with his two previous wives.

Court records show another woman filed an injunction for protection against him in 2012. She said she locked herself in a bedroom after he made a comment, and he hit the door so hard that it popped open. He began to yell and she told him it was the last straw. He told her she was not going to get out of there with his kids.

She said they had discussed divorce, but “he told me that if I ever tried to leave him that he would kill me and bury me so deep that no one would find me,” she said in the document.

Davis was released as the Atlantic Coast baseball coach after his arrest of February. At the time, Duval County Public Schools spokeswoman Laureen Ricks said Davis “remains employed at the school but was released from coaching baseball due to personal and health concerns including the arrest.”

Davis had been at Atlantic Coast since 2010.

He played high school ball at Sandalwood, where he was the Times-Union’s player of the year in 1982 and 1983. Davis was a No. 1 pick by the Chicago White Sox, where he played from 1985-88. He was 8-14 with a 4.91 ERA for his career, and started 41 of 49 games. He struck out 126 batters in 247.2 innings.

KEY POINTS

  • Italy has outnumbered China in terms of COVID-19 deaths
  • The country is currently implementing stricter rules
  • A “Pokemon Go” player was recently charged for playing the game outside and for violating the current COVID-19 guidelines imposed by the country

The absence of vaccines for the deadly pandemic COVID-19, triggered almost all countries all over the world to embrace the draconian method of locking down its borders. This is one way to flatten the curve and to starve the novel coronavirus from finding hosts and spreading the infection. But, for the love of the game, a “Pokemon Go” player was charged for ignoring the COVID-19 restriction.

Italy now has the most number of deaths caused by the COVID-19, and it is enforcing stricter guidelines to prevent the spread of infection beginning Mar. 09, 2020. Comicbook recently reported that a 31-year old “Pokemon Go” player was recently charged for violating the country’s lockdown rules. He was caught playing the augmented reality game outside of his house in Italy.

During the lockdown, residents are restricted from leaving their homes and are only allowed to do so for specific reasons like purchasing necessities. Despite the danger of contracting the novel coronavirus, authorities fined over 43,000 people caught violating the country’s rules.  Leggo, an Italian news outlet revealed that the 31-year old “Pokemon Go” player is a resident of San Fermo and was playing the augmented reality game with his daughter when he was intercepted by the authority.

“Pokemon Go” earned its popularity because it is the first game to allow players to go outside, travel places, and personally interact with other players in an actual real-world setting. It offers exciting features like Raid Battles that encourage players to go out and play together. But, the current COVID-19 pandemic just makes it difficult for players to do the things that they enjoy doing in the augmented reality game.

Niantic recently postponed several in-game events in “Pokemon Go” to encourage players to home quarantine or self-isolate. Moreover, the game developer made some changes to the game like making incense more affordable, so “Pokemon Go” players could lure pocket monsters to their location. Pokemon Eggs are now easier to hatch, which could now be accomplished by just making a few footsteps.

The COVID-19 pandemic has, by far, changed the way we do our day to day activities, and Italy is not an isolated case. Most countries practice total lockdown to prevent the spread of infection. “Pokemon Go” players might find it hard these days to enjoy the popular augmented reality game, but the risk of contracting the novel coronavirus far outweighs the joy of playing the game.

ROCHESTER, Ind. (WNDU) – A former wide receiver for the Notre Dame football team was arrested before his court hearing Tuesday morning.

Kevin Stepherson arrived at the Fulton County Courthouse in Rochester for a violation of his probation. Upon his arrival, he was arrested before stepping foot into the courtroom and taken to the Fulton County Law Enforcement Center.

This comes after multiple run-ins with the law over the last six weeks.

Stepherson was originally arrested for possession of marijuana in August of 2016 when he and four other teammates were pulled over in Fulton County. In March, Stepherson entered a plea to have his charges removed as long as he could stay out of trouble for one year. In June, the court accepted that plea for what’s known as a conditional discharge.

But the former Irish wide receiver, who was kicked off the football team earlier this month, has not stayed out of trouble.

On December 14th, Stepherson was pulled over in Marshall County. He was later charged with possession of marijuana, speeding, and no valid driver’s license. The next day, he was arrested for shoplifting a pair a pair of sweatpants from Macy’s at the University Park Mall in Mishawaka. He was picked up walking out of the store wearing an stolen $59 pair of Nautica sweatpants he allegedly did not purchase. He’s been charged with conversion, a class A misdemeanor from this incident. Both of those incidents were first reported by WNDU.

Then on Friday, Stepherson was arrested again for possession of marijuana, this time in Whitley County.

Fulton County prosecutors first filed a petition to revoke Stepherson’s plea deal for conditional discharge on December 29th and have amended that petition a few times since then; including as recently as Monday, when they filed an amended two petition to terminate his conditional discharge.

Stepherson cannot post bond and will remain behind bars for at least a week while he awaits his next hearing on Tuesday, February 6.

A judge will decide on one of three options: continue Stepherson on the conditional discharge program, put him on probation, or terminate his conditional discharge and sentence him for time behind bars.

If sentenced, Stepherson could face up to a 180-day sentence and serve up to half of that time. Possession of marijuana is a Class B misdemeanor.

He still faces charges for possession of marijuana in Marshall and Whitley counties as well as the theft charge out of St. Joseph County.

Despite the August arrest last year, Stepherson did not sit out a single game in 2016. He finished 2nd on the team in receiving.

While it was never acknowledged by Notre Dame, Stepherson was suspended for the first four games of 2017 for what sources tell NewsCenter 16 was a violation of team rules. He eventually returned to action and became one of Notre Dame’s most reliable wide receivers, catching a team high five touchdowns during the most recent football season. Stepherson started three games, catching 19 total passes for 359 yards.
