The NBA announced it has suspended former Miami Heat center Willie Reed for six games on Tuesday due to a domestic violence charge involving his wife last summer in Miami.

Reed, who played 71 games for the Heat last season, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor battery on August 5th in Miami.

According to an NBA press release, Reed entered into a pretrial diversion program in October to resolve the criminal charge against him.

The release stated: “The NBA conducted its own investigation into this matter, reviewing all available materials and interviewing the parties involved. The NBA also consulted with a group of domestic violence experts who provide the league with guidance in such cases.”

Reed, 27, signed with the Clippers in the offseason and was dealt to the Pistons on Jan. 29 as part of the deal between the two teams involving All-Star Blake Griffin.

The league said Reed will begin serving his suspension on Wednesday when Detroit plays the Brooklyn Nets.

Reed (6-10, 220 pounds), who is in his third NBA season, averaged 5.3 points and 4.7 rebounds in 14.5 minutes per game in mostly a backup role during his one season in Miami.
