Ryan Leaf, the former Washington State quarterback and No. 2 overall NFL draft pick who recovered from substance abuse problems to carve out a career in sports broadcasting, was reportedly arrested Friday in Palm Springs, California, on a misdemeanor domestic battery charge according to TMZ.

According to a booking report filed by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Leaf was charged with domestic battery of a spouse, former spouse, fiancee, dating partner, or co-parent and was arrested by the Palm Desert Police Department around 2 p.m. Leaf was then booked into jail at 3:32 p.m., according to the report.

Bail for Leaf was set at at $5,000. He was still in custody when this story was posted and no further details about what may have led to the reported dispute are available. Leaf is set to appear in court at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

The 44-year-old has been engaged to Anna Kleinsorge, a former Georgetown volleyball player, since 2017. She gave birth to their first child, McGyver, in October 2017. Leaf was formerly married to Nicole Lucia, at the time a cheerleader for the San Diego Chargers – the team that made Leaf the No. 2 pick of the NFL draft in 1998 – but the two separated in 2003 and later filed for divorce.

On Thursday, Leaf posted a video of his son running in circles in their house, along with a caption that read, “Come on…this is one cute kiddo, loving this time with my family. Look what we made @bannanazon #loveyou.” The Twitter handle, @bannanazon, is linked to an account for Leaf’s fiancee, Kleinsorge.

A native of Great Falls, Leaf has spent the past two years working as a college football color analyst. He worked multiple WSU games for the Pac-12 Network before inking a deal with the ESPN networks last July. Leaf and broadcast partner Clay Matvick were on the call for the Cougars’ most recent game, a 31-21 loss to Air Force in the Cheez-It Bowl at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Last year, Leaf was also inducted into the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the 2019 class, and was celebrated on the field during the Cougars’ Sept. 7 game against Northern Colorado.

Leaf’s career in the NFL lasted just five seasons. The former Heisman Trophy finalist is widely considered one of professional football’s biggest disappointments, especially in relation to where he was picked in the 1998 draft, just one spot after Indianapolis Colts great and future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning.

Seven years after his NFL career ended, after Leaf made just 21 starts with the San Diego Chargers and Dallas Cowboys, he encountered legal trouble and was indicted on burglary and controlled-substance charges in Texas. Three years later, Leaf was in Great Falls when he was arrested on burglary, theft and drug charges, then arrested less than a week later on similar charges.

Leaf’s situation worsened when he was found guilty of “behavior that violated conditions of his drug treatment placement” and subsequently accused of threatening a program staff member at his rehabilitation center. In May 2014, Leaf was incarcerated in Shelby, Montana, and four months later was sentenced to five years, although he was released seven months later.

Since his release, Leaf has managed to curb his substance abuse problems and used his platform to speak to various groups about the severity of drug addiction. In addition to his work in sports media – Leaf co-hosts a Pac-12 radio show on Sirius XM – the former QB has served as a program ambassador for Transcend Recovery Community, a group of sober living houses in cities across the country.

Leaf delivered a speech at a HOF ceremony in Spokane the night before he was celebrated in front of tens of thousands of fans at Martin Stadium, telling the crowd, “I can only expect there were many years when the athlete maybe deserved to be here, but the man didn’t live up to it. And that’s why I think it’s so much more special today. I’m so glad I’m sober to appreciate what you guys have given me.

“Over the last 21 years since I left Washington State, for a long time I didn’t represent the crimson and gray very well. And because my name was recognized and talked about all the time when I messed up, you guys were drug down into the mud with it, and you didn’t deserve it. It’s an opportunity for me to apologize to all of you for having been that person for so long.”

A Washington Redskins player is facing five charges, including illegal discharge of a firearm, following his arrest in a Denver suburb Saturday morning

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. —
A Washington Redskins player is facing five charges, including felony illegal discharge of a firearm, following his arrest in a Denver suburb Saturday morning.

The Douglas County sheriff’s office says deputies arrested 27-year-old Cody Latimer after responding to a report just after midnight of shots fired inside an apartment in Englewood, Colorado.

“We are aware of the situation and have informed the NFL League Office,” a Washington Redskins team spokesman said. “We will continue to gather more information and have no further comment at this time.”

Deputies say they found three individuals in the apartment at the Zenith Meridian Apartments, one with minor injuries unrelated to a gunshot.

Latimer was taken into custody and is also facing charges of second-degree assault, menacing, prohibited use of a weapon and reckless endangerment.

Latimer posted a $25,000 bond and was released later Saturday morning.

Latimer, a wide receiver, joined the Redskins in March after two years with the New York Giants and four years before that with the Denver Broncos.

The sheriff’s office says it is continuing to investigate.

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Brock Washington, a Michigan State freshman walk-on basketball player, has been charged with misdemeanor assault.

Washington, 19, was arrested March 8 and charged the same day in Ingham County with assault or assault and battery, according to Michigan State Police records.

Washington’s charge generally carries a sentence of up to 93 days in jail, although it is not clear whether Washington has been convicted of that or any other charge.

Washington’s case is not listed in court records, and officials with the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office declined to comment, saying the case is nonpublic.

In Michigan, offenders younger than 24 who have pleaded to some criminal offenses can have their court records closed to public view under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act. Under the law, such records keep nonpublic status unless the trainee commits another offense.

The prosecutor’s office rejected a Lansing State Journal Freedom of Information Act request for documents related to the case on Friday, indicating that the case is not closed and disclosure could “interfere with law enforcement proceedings.”

A similar request filed with MSU was previously rejected; a follow-up request awaits a response.

An attorney for Washington could not be reached because his case is not listed in court records.

Matt Larson, a spokesman for MSU basketball, did not immediately respond to a message left seeking comment.

Washington dressed for all of MSU’s 35 games this season but did not play while taking a redshirt. The Spartans had the week off between the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments when Washington’s arrest took place, but he was in uniform and on the bench for their two NCAA Tournament games, March 16 and 18, at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

Washington played high school basketball for Southfield (Mich.) Christian, where he helped lead the Eagles to the Class D state semifinals and set their single-game scoring mark with 40 points against Plymouth Christian. When he announced plans to join MSU as a preferred walk-on, he reportedly had interest from Oakland and a number of Mid-American Conference schools.

The incident comes on the heels of increased scrutiny for MSU athletics. Athletic director Mark Hollis resigned in January, just days after university president Lou Anna Simon resigned in the wake of former MSU doctor Larry Nassar’s sentencing and continued issues surrounding the university’s handling of sexual assault claims on campus.

On Wednesday, three former MSU football players pleaded to seduction, a felony charge related to a sex assault investigation. The former players — Donnie Corley Jr., Josh King and Demetric Vance — had been charged with criminal sexual conduct but will likely avoid jail time after reaching a plea deal with prosecutors.

Auston Robertson, another former football player, currently awaits trial on two counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

East Lansing – Michigan State basketball player Brock Washington has been charged with misdemeanor assault, according to state police records.

Washington, 19, is a walk-on from Southfield who redshirted during the 2017-18 season. He was arrested and charged on March 8, records indicate. However, there is no public record in Ingham county related to his case.

When asked to comment, officials with the Ingham County Prosecutor’s office said there was no public record on which to comment.

It leaves open the possibility Washington was sentenced under Michigan’s Holmes Youthful Trainee Act, which would allow him to avoid any lasting criminal record for the guilty plea if he meets certain requirements. It’s a program available to offenders age 17-24. It was under that act that former Michigan State football players Josh King, Donnie Corley and Demetric Vance were sentenced earlier this week in their sexual assault cases.

Michigan State officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment or provide an update on Washington’s status with the team. Even as a redshirt, Washington was dressed for all of Michigan State’s 35 games this season.

In mid-February, ESPN reported that Washington was at the center of a sexual assault investigation. However, records indicate the misdemeanor charge against Washington was “excluding sexual.”

At that time, a request to the MSU Police by The Detroit News for any records pertaining to the investigation was denied.

Punishment for misdemeanor assault can include jail time of up to 93 days and/or a $500 fine.

Michigan State Spartans freshman guard Brock Washington was charged with misdemeanor assault in Ingham County, Michigan, ESPN’s Paula Lavigne reported Friday.

Lavigne first reported in February prosecutors were investigating Washington after a female student said he “groped her without her permission” last August. Campus police initially investigated before handing off their findings to Ingham County prosecutors in December.

Washington was formally charged March 8.

According to Lavigne, reporters from ESPN’s Outside the Lines asked for a copy of the police report in February regarding the allegations. The university received an extension before ultimately denying ESPN’s request.

Interim president John Engler said “even naming this statute gives information that the statute specifically was designed to protect” in explaining the university’s decision.

Engler took over as interim president in January after his predecessor, Lou Anna Simon, resigned following criticism of her and the university’s handling of allegations made against Larry Nassar.

Lavigne noted Michigan penal code 750.81, the crime with which Washington is charged, falls under the umbrella of the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act.

The law allows anybody between the ages of 17 and 24 to plead guilty to any crime covered by the statute without the guilty plea becoming public record. Should the accused follow the terms of his or her probation and any conditions laid out by the judge, the case is ultimately dismissed.

Three former Michigan State football players—Donnie Corley, Josh King and Demetric Vance—pleaded guilty to seduction charges Wednesday. The three reached an agreement with prosecutors after they had initially been charged with sexual assault, and the judge in the case allowed them to qualify for Holmes Youthful Trainee status.

Washington Nationals TV analyst Ray Knight has resolved the legal fallout from his bizarre—and still mysterious—altercation with a 33-year-old man that got him arrested and charged with assault and battery last October.

In Fairfax County court Monday, lawyers for Knight and the alleged victim, who has not been named, said they’d reached an agreement to resolve the matter, and the charges were dismissed. No details were provided and the lawyers declined to elaborate after the brief hearing. Neither Knight, 65, nor the alleged victim appeared in court.

Not much is known about the fight that led to Knight’s arrest or the details of the agreement to resolve it. On October 23, the Fairfax County Police Department released the following statement:

“Former Major League Baseball player, manager and TV analyst Charles Ray Knight has been charged with assault and battery after an incident in his home in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County. Our officers responded to a fight call in the 7500 block of Ashby Lane around 4 a.m. Sunday, after an argument between Knight and an acquaintance, a 33-year-old man, became physical. Both men had visible injuries. The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Knight was also treated at a hospital and then taken to the Adult Detention Center. He has since been released and his scheduled court date is January 8, 2018.”
