A 16-year-old Bahamian boy was charged with killing a 79-year-old Haitian woman yesterday.

A small crowd gathered outside the courthouse in Jones Town, Eight Mile Rock, as the minor was brought and escorted by officers at about 11am, with a towel over his head.

Magistrate Gwen Claude allowed only the minor’s parents and his attorney Keith Seymour to be permitted inside the courtroom for the proceedings. Neither the press nor any of the victim’s family members were allowed inside.

Reporters were only able to enter the court after the proceedings to be given information from Police Prosecutor 2628 Sergeant Garth McIntosh.

According to the docket, it is alleged that sometime between Friday June 19 and Saturday June 20, the accused by means of unlawful harm intentionally caused the death of Elisia Theoc, of Pinedale, Eight Mile Rock.

Theoc had been reported missing by family members after she did not return home Friday evening. Her body was later discovered Saturday morning in bushes in Pinedale. Her death is the eighth homicide in Grand Bahama, according to Tribune records.

In addition to the murder charge, the juvenile was also charged with housebreaking. It is alleged that on the same date, the accused broke into the home of Keisha Coverley, of Martin Town, Eight Mile Rock and stole a television, Android box, and a black LG DVD player, altogether valued at $400.

All the items were recovered by the police.

The matters were adjourned to August 4, to be heard before a juvenile panel.

Also charged with receiving was a 17-year-old juvenile. It is alleged that the accused on the same date received the stolen items in question. He was granted $1,500 bail and the magistrate imposed a curfew on him. The matter was adjourned to August 4, to be heard before a juvenile panel.

Alison De Courcy-Ireland was charged with being impaired in 2015 accident that left former Canadiens player with a broken nose and foot.

The woman who was charged with impaired driving while she was allegedly behind the wheel of former Montreal Canadien Zack Kassian’s pickup truck when it crashed in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce more than four years ago will have to undergo a second trial in October.

Alison De Courcy-Ireland, 25, was supposed to learn her fate as far back as May 3, 2019, the date Quebec Court Judge Denis Mondor originally set to deliver his decision on the two charges she has faced since 2016; operating a motor vehicle while her ability to drive was impaired by alcohol or a drug and causing an accident while impaired that left Kassian injured.

Kassian, 29, never played a regular-season game with the Canadiens. The team obtained him through a trade with the Vancouver Canucks on July 1, 2015. Kassian was with the Canadiens as they prepared for the start of the 2015-16 regular season when a pickup truck loaned to him by a dealership crashed into a tree on Clanranald Ave., near the corner of Côte-St-Luc Rd.

The hockey player suffered a broken nose and a broken left foot in the crash. The NHL suspended Kassian without pay because he had violated the league’s substance-abuse program the night of the crash. Kassian was already in the program before he was traded to the Canadiens and during De Courcy-Ireland’s trial admitted he consumed alcohol and cocaine at his home in the hours before the crash occurred.

While Kassian was recovering, the Canadiens traded him to the Edmonton Oilers on Dec. 28, 2015. He is still an Oiler and was enjoying the best season of his NHL career when the league was shut down in March by the COVID-19 pandemic.

When Kassian testified during De Courcy-Ireland’s trial in February 2019, he did so on a video linkup from a location in Edmonton to accommodate his hockey schedule. He will likely be called to testify again when De Courcy-Ireland’s second trial is held at the Montreal courthouse.

On Monday, Quebec Court Judge Mélanie Hébert set three days, beginning on Oct. 7, as the dates for the second trial.

The new trial was ordered by a different judge earlier this year on a request from the Crown after it was determined that Mondor, the judge in the first trial, was unable to deliver his verdict because he is suffering from an undisclosed illness.

On Feb. 7, 2019, Mondor heard the closing arguments of the prosecutor in the case and said he would deliver his decision in three months. On April 26, 2019, he sent emails to lawyers on both sides of the case informing them that he was unable to deliver the decision as scheduled on May 3, 2019.

The date was pushed back three times until a coordinating judge at the Montreal courthouse informed both parties that Mondor was ill.

When the date was delayed again to February, the Crown requested a new trial. While the time that the judge took to deliberate on the decision would not have counted if De Courcy-Ireland argued it had taken too long to prosecute her case the Crown conceded in its motion that it should take “appropriate measures” to bring a case to its end.

An 18-year-old woman has been charged with murder following the death of a teenager in Fife.

Joshua Kerr, 18, died following a collision between a pedestrian and a car near Leslie on Friday.

Grace Ross, of Glenrothes, appeared in private in Falkirk Sheriff Court on Monday.

She made no plea to a charge of murder and was released on bail.

Her case was continued for further examination and the date of her next appearance is yet to be confirmed.

Joshua suffered serious injuries in the incident near Little Balquhomrie Farm and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Emergency services rushed to his aid following a report of a collision involving one vehicle and a pedestrian at around 11.10am.

Joshua’s parents Jamie Simpson and Angela Kerr later paid tribute to him in a statement which said: “His mum, dad, little brother and anyone that ever knew Josh will never forget him.

“He was the perfect person and we will forever love him.”

Joshua was a talented pool player, having represented Scotland, and an ardent Raith Rovers supporter.

A spokesman for Raith Rovers Football Club, where he was a season ticket holder, said everyone was devastated to hear about the tragedy.

In a statement, the club said: “The thoughts of everyone at RRFC are with the family at this sad time.

“Always willing to help others, Josh, alongside his mum Angela, also helped out in hospitality at Raith Rovers during the season just ended.”

A donations page set up by Joshua’s friends at the Ciswo Snooker League to help his family during their grief had raised more than £3,000 by Monday afternoon.

A Greenbushes resident has been arrested and charged with murder and robbery, following the brazen attack on an elderly couple in their home in Rowallan Park, a week ago.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said it is alleged that last Saturday between 10:30am and 11:30am the couple were at home in Maasdorp Street when an unknown suspect entered through the unlocked back door.

According to Naidu the 29-year-old man confronted Martha Snyman, 83, in the passage of the house.

In the altercation, Snyman’s head was injured . She died at the scene Naidu said.

The man then went to the lounge where he confronted Snyman’s husband, David, 76. He sustained slight head injuries and survived the attack, Naidu said.

Two cellphones, cash, jewellery and other household items were taken.

On Thursday members of the Kabega Park SAPS followed up on information received about a possible suspect in the Kuyga area and a 29-year-old male was detained for further questioning.

“Follow-up investigation on Friday [May 15] led members of the Mount Road Cluster Detective Trio Task team and the K9 unit members to several houses in the Kuyga area where most of the stolen items were recovered,” Naidu said.

Police recovered Snyman’s diamond ring, two cellphones, a DVD player, watch and a jacket.

The man has been charged with murder and house robbery and will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates’ court on Monday.

Mount Road Cluster Commander, Major General Thembisile Patekile commended the teams for their swift investigation and arrest of the suspect.

“The SAPS has an inherent responsibility to ensure that the elderly are safe and secure therefore we will be working in close collaboration with the prosecuting authority to ensure a successful prosecution,” Patekile said.

  • Dean Laidley allegedly sent text messages meant for a friend to his ex-girlfriend
  • He was charged with stalking the woman after he was arrested near her home
  • Police leaked pictures of Laidley in custody showing him in a wig and dress
  • The former AFL player is accused of breaching AVO ‘100 times’ prior to arrest
  • Reportedly angry she broke off relationship after he bought her an apartment

Former AFL player and coach Dean Laidley accidentally sent text messages meant for a friend to the ex-girlfriend he is accused of stalking.

A Melbourne court heard Laidley allegedly intimidated and followed the woman after their relationship turned sour.

On May 1, the day before the 53-year-old was arrested wearing a wig and dress, police allege he sent a text message to his victim that ‘appeared to be for someone else,’.

The text message read: ‘She said she was staying home tonight… Wasn’t seeing him the whole weekend. She did say that then I repeated it later and she said no I like to stay home Friday nights. Nothing changes, bulls**t lies again,’ police claimed.

The court heard Laidley had repeatedly abused the woman, calling her a ‘sl*t’ and a ‘c***’ after she broke off the relationship but held onto an apartment he had recently purchased for her.

Laidley told police his alleged victim had pressured him into buying her an apartment while seeing another man.

He claimed once the sale of the apartment had settled, the woman dumped him and withdrew all contact.

Police alleged the former North Melbourne player threatened to run her down in his car and later sent her a photo of himself with a belt around his neck, threatening self harm.

The woman claimed she was so terrified of Laidley that she refused to leave the apartment to shop or go to work.

She claimed Laidley ‘hit rock bottom’ in November last year, describing him as ‘lonely, depressed and on drugs’.

The court heard Laidley spent the last week locked in a psychiatric unit of the Melbourne Assessment Prison.

He was arrested last week with methylamphetamine allegedly stashed in his bra and charged with stalking.

Laidley was granted bail on Monday night and driven to a private rehab clinic in Geelong south-west of Melbourne, where he will undergo intensive drug and mental health treatment for the next 28 days.

A wigless and tired-looking Laidley appeared in court via video link, wearing what appeared to be green prison garb and with his breasts visible on the video screen.

The Melbourne Magistrates Court heard Laidley repeatedly called her while parked out the front of her house, taking photos of the property.

On the day of his arrest, Laidley reportedly called the woman 43 times.

Laidley was arrested later that night outside her apartment and taken to St Kilda police station.

Days later, on May 4, police picked Laidley up again with a small amount of what they believed was methamphetamine or ‘ice’ in his possession.

This time Laidley was locked up.

The court heard Laidley is accused of breaching an intervention order more than 100 times and had tried to obtain CCTV footage of his victim from her apartment block.

Police claimed Laidley was extremely upset on the last day he was arrested and claimed to be visiting his son, but could not remember the address.

The matter became national news after photographs of Laidley dressed as a woman were taken by police officers and leaked.

The officers involved have been stood down and are currently under investigation.
