ATLANTA — The starting point guard for a Georgia university women’s basketball team is one of five people indicted on charges including murder in the July killing of a man who was found shot to death in the parking deck of an Atlanta apartment complex.

Kennesaw State University’s Kamiyah Street, 20, turned herself in Thursday, according to Fulton County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Tracy Flanagan.

The university’s athletic department said in a statement that once it found out about her arrest Thursday, Street was “suspended indefinitely” from all team and athletic activities.

Street remained in the Fulton County jail Monday without bond. Online court records did not list an attorney who could comment on her behalf. Her arraignment was set for Dec. 13.

Street and the four men named in the indictment all face charges including murder, felony murder, attempt to commit armed robbery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Atlanta police said in an emailed statement that officers responded around 1:45 a.m. on July 16 to a report of a person shot and found Nashiem Hubbard-Etienne, 21, dead in the parking deck. Preliminary information indicates it may have been a “targeted shooting,” and the investigation is ongoing, the statement says.

The indictment filed Oct. 22 names Street, along with: Cortez Devon Banks, 22; Dontacus Brantley, 20; Johnerton Blake Gilstrap, 21; and Tobias Raynard Wells, 20.

Police investigators were able to identify and secure warrants for the four men in Hubbard-Etienne’s death, Atlanta police Sgt. John Chafee wrote in an email. The decision to also charge Street was made by the Fulton County district attorney’s office, Chafee wrote.

The 14-count indictment says Hubbard-Etienne was shot to death during an armed robbery attempt and also says at least one shot was fired at a second man. The indictment does not say who fired the shots, but all five defendants are charged with murder and felony murder, both of which carry an automatic sentence of life in prison.

Banks, Gilstrap and Wells were all in the Fulton County jail with no bond set.

Banks was arrested July 22. An email or functioning phone number for his attorney could not immediately be found.

Wells was arrested July 26. His attorney, Charles Rooks, wrote in an email that Wells “maintains his innocence in this unfortunate death.” He declined to comment further.

Gilstrap was arrested Aug. 12. His attorney did not immediately respond to an email Monday seeking comment on the charges against him.

Brantley was not in jail Monday and no attorney was listed for him in online court records.

A Wallace Community College-Selma women’s basketball player was arrested Tuesday night for drug trafficking.

Aaliyah Tyanna Hatcher, 18, was charged with drug trafficking, drug excise tax and accessory after the fact. Hatcher is currently in the Dallas County Jail on a $1.6 million bond.

Dallas County Sheriff Mike Granthum said deputies Scott Rouse and Michael Kiser were on extra patrol and heard complaints of loud music at the 100 block of Alabama Avenue around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Rouse and Kiser saw a large congregation of people and discovered a suspect in a vehicle with large amounts of marijuana, cash and a scale inside. Hatcher admitted that the marijuana was hers. They arrested Hatcher.

Granthum said the package marijuana and edible marijuana, made from cereal bars and candy, weighed 8.2 pounds.

“She’s young and that’s sad,” Granthum said. “She’s an excellent student and one of the best girl basketball players to come through this area. She comes from a great family. It looked like she was going to sell the marijuana. People selling drugs are a cancer to our society. We’re putting a stop to it.”

Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson said Hatcher will arraigned Thursday in the Dallas County Courthouse.

Hatcher was a member of The Selma Times-Journal All Dallas County Girls basketball team last year and just completed her freshman year at WCCS.

Veteran AFL journalist Mike Sheahan claims he’s known Dean Laidley has liked to dress in women’s clothing for over a decade, but says there was never any grounds for him, or anyone in the media, to report it.

Laidley, 53, was photographed wearing a long blonde wig and a dress after his arrest outside a home in St Kilda on Saturday night.

Two senior Victorian constables this week were suspended over the leaked pictures of Laidley inside a Melbourne police station, with both likely to be charged with accessing police information without authorisation.

Asked by Hawthorn legend Don Scott on the You Cannot Be Serious podcast whether he’d previously known Laidley enjoyed dressing in women’s clothing — and how long he’d known for — Sheahan said: “Yep … I’m guessing maybe 10 to 12 years.”

Scott then questioned why Sheahan, with that knowledge, didn’t further investigate or write about it when he was a full-time reporter.

Sheahan, the former chief football writer of the Herald Sun, replied: “Why should I have written something about a bloke who’s got a bent about what clothes he wears in private?

“Is that in the public interest in it?”

Sheahan said Laidley’s attire choices were only of interest to the public now because he’d been charged by police and the photos of him had been released.

“It’s sad isn’t it … (but) it’s not about being a cross-dresser, he’s facing serious criminal charges,” Sheahan said.

“His situation is sad. But the issue about whether he’s a cross-dresser – and it was 10 or 12 years ago – if he’s not breaking any law … why would you write about it? And how is it in the public interest?”

Deputy Police Commissioner Shane Patton said on Monday that six police officers were sent the photos via WhatsApp and they could face charges if it’s found they disseminated them further.

The dissemination of the pictures of Laidley in the station’s interview room was an “appalling” act, Mr Patton said.

Laidley is facing stalking and other charges. He remains in custody until May 11 after not applying for bail.

Australian Lawyers for Human Rights said the behaviour of the officers who distributed the photos was alarming and it was an opportunity for Victoria Police to further support the trans and gender diverse community.

“The act of a police officer secretly taking a photograph of an accused person while the person is in custody is extremely dangerous,” ALHR President Kerry Weste said in a statement.

“It damages trust and confidence in the Victoria Police and it damages the community’s faith in the rule of law.”

*Kamiyah Street, the starting point guard on the Kennesaw State women’s basketball team, was taken into custody by Atlanta police on Thursday for her link to the murder of 21-year-old Nashiem Hubbard-Etienne.

Police confirmed to the Atlanta Journal Constitution that the 20-year-old was arrested in connection to the July 16 “targeted shooting” death of Hubbard-Etienne, whose body was found in an Atlanta apartment complex. Police believe the incident was a robbery gone awry.

Street is one of five people indicted on the murder charges. She is facing eight charges, including three counts of felony murder, criminal attempt to commit robbery, and two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Street was named in the indictment along with: Cortez Devon Banks, 22; Dontacus Brantley, 20; Johnerton Blake Gilstrap, 21; and Tobias Raynard Wells, 20. Police are still searching for an additional suspect, per ESPN.com. All five are charged with murder and felony murder, both of which carry an automatic sentence of life in prison.

District Attorney Paul Howard said in a statement that police identified Street by reviewing surveillance video. An independent investigation of the shooting “clearly indicated Street’s involvement with the death,” Howard said.

The 14-count indictment filed Oct. 22 says Hubbard-Etienne was shot during an armed robbery attempt and at least one shot was fired at a second man. The indictment does not say who fired the shots.

“We were made aware Thursday evening that Kamiyah Street of the KSU women’s basketball team was arrested and is being held, pending charges,” a Kennesaw State athletic department spokesperson said in a statement. “The individual has been suspended indefinitely from all women’s basketball team and athletic activities. Neither the university nor the athletic department have any additional information at this time.”

The starting point guard for Kennesaw State University’s women’s basketball team has been charged with the murder of a man found shot to death in an Atlanta apartment complex earlier this year, authorities confirmed Saturday.

Kamiyah Street was arrested Thursday on eight counts, including murder, three counts of felony murder, criminal attempt to commit armed robbery, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, Fulton County jail records show.

Atlanta police confirmed they charged Street for her alleged role in the July 16 shooting death of a man whose body was discovered in the parking deck of the Heritage Station apartments on McDaniel Street.

Investigators at the scene determined that 21-year-old Nashiem Hubbard-Etienne was “the victim of a targeted shooting,” Atlanta police spokesman James White said.

Additional details about the case weren’t immediately available Saturday evening, and police said the homicide investigation is ongoing.

David Beall, KSU’s assistant athletic director for communications, told AJC.com the team was made aware of the charges against Street on Thursday evening.

“The individual has been suspended indefinitely from all women’s basketball team and athletic activities,” he said. “Neither the university nor the athletic department have any additional information at this time.”

Street, a junior who graduated from Mays High School in Atlanta, averaged 21 points and 5 rebounds through the team’s first four games of the season. At 37 minutes per game, only one other player on her team saw more time on the court.
