Coming out of college at Missouri, Keith Wright was a promising talent destined for NFL success. In 2003, Wright completed his lifelong dream of becoming a professional football player when he was drafted by the Houston Texans. However, Wright didn’t quite pan out in the NFL. He lasted just four years in the league, and he went down a dark path in retirement. Wright went on to commit a series of robberies and assaults that landed him a 234-year prison sentence. It’s safe to say he won’t be getting out at any point in this lifetime.

Keith Wright had a short-lived NFL career

Keith Wright was a standout at Missouri before getting drafted to the NFL in 2003, but his poor choices off the field got him life in prison.

Wright was an effective pass rusher and run stuffer on Missouri’s defensive line in the early 2000s. He recorded 68 tackles in his first year with the Tigers and amped it up to 92 tackles in his second year. Between 2001 and 2002, Wright switched from defensive end to defensive tackle, and it paid dividends.

Wright was selected by the Texans in the sixth round of the 2003 NFL draft. His success at Missouri didn’t translate to the NFL, though. Wright was sent to the Texans’ practice squad to start the season, and he was picked up by the Indianapolis Colts shortly after.

From there, Wright jumped to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2004. He spent one season with the Bucs before he was released in 2005. The Arizona Cardinals then signed Wright to a one-year contract, but he was released less than a month later.

Wright finished his career with stints with the Buccaneers again and the Detroit Lions. He barely made an impact on the field in four years, and he was out of the league by 2006.

Keith Wright committed 19 felonies by the time he was 32

After his NFL career ended, Wright turned to a life of crime. In 2011 alone, Wright committed three home invasions around the Sacramento area where he lived at the time. During one of the home invasions, Wright sexually assaulted a woman and forced her to take money out of an ATM.

Wright racked up 19 felony charges in his second life. Along with home invasion, Wright was charged with kidnapping, armed robbery, false imprisonment, forcible oral copulation, and first-degree burglary.

In 2012, Wright was sentenced to 234 years and 8 months in prison. He was just 32 years old at the time.

Wright’s 234-year prison sentence is the longest in sports history

Keith Wright’s reckless actions after his NFL career cost him four lifetimes in prison. Imagine hearing the number 234 and realizing you’ll never experience freedom again. That was the harsh reality for Wright in 2012.

Wright’s lengthy prison sentence is actually the longest for any athlete in professional sports history. No one else even came close to 200 years.

Clifford Etienne, a boxer from the early 2000s, came closest to Wright when he was sentenced to 160 years in prison for a slew of crimes.

Wright will remain locked up in prison for the rest of his life. What could’ve been a promising football career turned into one of the most tragic sports stories ever told.

A Memphis judge Tuesday set an October trial date for a man charged with conspiring with the ex-wife of Lorenzen Wright to kill the former NBA player more than nine years ago.

Shelby County Judge Lee Coffee told Billy Ray Turner during a court hearing that his trial would start on Oct. 26 after prosecutors and his defense attorney agreed on that date. A trial in Wright’s slaying would involve one of the most highly publicized homicide cases in Memphis’ history.

Turner has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy issued in a December 2017 indictment. He could face life in prison if convicted of first-degree murder.

Wright’s decomposing body was found riddled with bullet wounds in a swampy field in east Memphis on July 28, 2010. Wright, 34, had been missing for 10 days before his body was discovered.

A Memphis native, the 6-foot, 11-inch Wright played 13 seasons for the Memphis Grizzlies and four other NBA teams, including the Clippers. He was retired from the league when he was killed.

Wright’s ex-wife, Sherra Wright, entered a surprise guilty plea to facilitation of murder in July. Shelby County Criminal Court Judge Lee Coffee sentenced her to 30 years in prison. She could be a trial witness.

Turner, 48, pleaded guilty in June to possessing a weapon as a convicted felon. Prosecutors say Turner had two guns when he was charged with Wright’s killing. Turner was sentenced to 16 years in prison on the separate gun charge.

Turner’s trial in Wright’s killing had been set for September 2019, but it was delayed after prosecutors presented more potential evidence to Turner’s lawyer.

Turner, a landscaper in the Memphis suburb of Collierville, and Sherra Wright attended the same church. Witnesses said Sherra Wright masterminded a plan to have two men kill Lorenzen Wright at his home in Atlanta, but that attempt failed, according to an affidavit.

She and Turner then conspired to kill him in Memphis, and they dumped one of the guns used in the shooting in a Mississippi lake, authorities have said. A gun that was allegedly used in the killing was found in the lake weeks before charges were filed in the case.

One of the witnesses, Jimmie Martin, told authorities about the Atlanta plot and said he helped Turner and Sherra Wright clean the crime scene, authorities said in the affidavit, which was read in court by a prosecutor.

Martin has been convicted of murder in a separate case. He also could testify during the trial.

Turner’s lawyer, John Keith Perry, questioned Martin’s statements that Turner took part in Wright’s slaying.

“My client has been in jail now three years because of a convicted murderer,” Perry said.

Sherra Wright received $1 million from her ex-husband’s life insurance policy. She agreed to a settlement in 2014 in a court dispute over how she spent the insurance money meant to benefit their six children.

Wright’s mother, Deborah Marion, is ready for a trial, prosecutor Paul Hagerman said after the hearing.

“She wants an end to this process,” Hagerman said.

Prosecutors will not seek the death penalty against Sherra Wright and Billy Ray Turner in the death of former NBA player Lorenzen Wright and attorneys for the two will seek bond during a hearing next month.

During a brief hearing Monday,  attorneys for both defendants asked for a bond hearing, which was scheduled for April 12, since the case is no longer considered a capital case. Their next report date regarding the charges is set for April 26.

Monday’s appearance marked the first time the two were in the courtroom at the same time.

“As we discussed last time in chambers, the state would announce today that this would not be a capital case,” said prosecutor Paul Hagerman during the hearing.

Billy Ray Turner and Sherra Wright stood on opposite sides with their attorneys in between them in the courtroom.

Sherra Wright said “yes” when the judge asked if she understood what took place in court Monday.

Turner did not speak during the brief hearing.

Lorenzen Wright’s mother Deborah Marion and other family members attended Monday’s hearing, but left without talking to reporters.

Turner’s family was also in the court room.

Sherra Wright and Billy Ray Turner were charged late last year after authorities recovered a gun believed to be used in the homicide in a Walnut, Mississippi lake, seven years after Wright’s body was found in July 2010. Both defendants pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

They have remained in jail since their arrest and the court will look at a number of factors before deciding if they receive bond, defense attorneys for Wright and Turner said.

Lorenzen Wright’s ex-wife pleaded not guilty Monday to murder charges in connection with the death of the former NBA player in 2010.

Sherra Wright’s attorneys entered the not guilty pleas in Memphis, according to the Memphis Commercial-Appeal. Wright is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder.

Lorenzen Wright, who played for the Clippers, Hawks, Grizzlies, Kings and Cavaliers during his 13-year NBA career from 1996-2009, was found dead in Memphis in July 2010. He had been missing 10 days.

Police discovered shell casings from different caliber weapons at the scene, and an autopsy revealed he had been shot at least five times. In November 2017, police announced they recovered what is believed to be one of the murder weapons. That discovery provided a break in the case.

Police in Riverside, Calif., arrested Sherra Wright in December. Another man, Billy Turner, has pleaded not guilty to the same charges in connection with the murder. He is a landscaper who was a deacon at the church Sherra Wright attended.

Lorenzen Wright’s mother, Deborah Marion, told the Commercial-Appeal in December she believes her son’s $1 million insurance policy served as motivation for the killing.

The two defendants are scheduled for their next court appearance March 19. Prosecutor Paul Hagerman said he would announce at that time if he will seek the death penalty.

The body of Wright, 34, was found in southeast Memphis in July 2010, and investigators found evidence of different caliber shell casings at the scene. Wright apparently called 911 shortly after midnight on July 19, 2010, from a field near TPC Southwind golf course. An autopsy on his badly decomposed body found gunshot wounds to the head, chest and forearm.

The lawyer for a Shelby County man charged with killing Lorenzen Wright seven years ago said he has a lengthy process of investigating the case ahead of him and mentioned wiretapping and audio recordings as part the case file.

“I want to talk to every person who is mentioned in the investigatory file,” attorney John Keith Perry said Monday. “I think I count some 20,000 pages of investigation, different things, everything from audio recordings, wiretaps, all the way down to formal charges  starting with Collierville Police Department all the way through Memphis Police Department. I’m going to go step by step, page by page.”

Turner’s charges came after police announced in November that a gun they believed was used in the killing was recovered in a Mississippi lake.

Turner was indicted in December and pleaded not guilty. Later, a superseding indictment was returned against him adding charges and Sherra Wright as a codefendant. He pleaded not guilty to the charges in the superseding indictment on Monday. He is due back in court in March.

“He’s strong in faith,” Perry told reporters. “He has a strong mind. He’s holding up.”

Sherra Wright, the ex-wife of Lorenzen Wright, made her first Memphis court appearance on the charges last week.

A Murrieta woman will return to Tennessee where she will face accusations that she killed her ex-husband, who was a former NBA player with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Sherra Wright waived extradition during a brief hearing Monday in Riverside County Superior Court. Authorities now have 30 days to bring her to Memphis, where her ex-husband, Lorenzen Wright was found dead in 2010.

Monday’s hearing was scheduled after Sherra Wright opted last month to argue whether she was indeed the person named in her arrest warrant. Her attorney, Eric Keen, wouldn’t say Monday why she decided to waive extradition and he added his involvement in the case is now done.

“I expect her to be gone between now and the 22nd (of January),” Keen said.

Superior Court Judge David Gunn asked Sherra Wright several questions to make sure she understood she would be extradited to Tennessee. Each time, she said “Yes.”

A man, who Keen identified as Sherra Wright’s current husband, was in attendance Monday. It was the first time a friend or family member was present during her court appearances since being arrested last month.

He entered the courtroom carrying an umbrella with headphones around his neck. The moment the hearing ended, he placed the headphones on and quickly walked to a restroom.

The man exited a moment later and remained silent during an elevator ride to the lobby. He ignored members of the media who followed him to his vehicle.

Keen also left the courthouse immediately after the hearing as bailiffs took Sherra Wright into custody.

Lorenzen Wright went missing July 18, 2010. His decomposing body was found 10 days later in a wooded area outside Memphis.

Investigators said the 34-year-old basketball player called 911 early on July 19, 2010, but officers were not notified because the dispatchers could not pinpoint where the call came from. Once notified, investigators used cell towers to locate the body.

Lorenzen Wright had been shot multiple times and investigators found shell casings from multiple caliber guns at the scene. An autopsy documented at least five gunshot wounds and showed bullet fragments were lodged in his skull, chest and right forearm.

Authorities received a tip in 2016 that led them to a firearm at the bottom of a lake in Walnut, Mississippi last month.

Sherra Wright was ultimately identified as a suspect and federal marshals arrested the 38-year-old last month in Norco.

A  co-defendant, Billy Turner, was indicted and arrested Dec. 5 in the Memphis area. He’s scheduled to appear in court Jan. 29.

Officials declined to elaborate on the relationship between Wright and Turner, but Memphis Police Director Michael Rallings said investigators were, “confident that they knew each other.” The Memphis Commercial Appeal has previously reported that the two attended the same church.

According to an arrest report, witnesses identified Turner “as the person responsible for the murder.” He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment and was being held without bond. He is due back in court in Memphis next month.

He and Sherra Wright are charged in a three count indictment.

Count one charges them with killing Lorenzen Wright with premeditation. They are also charged “in furtherance of the conspiracy” with traveling “to the area of Callis (Cutoff) and Hacks Cross to kill Lorenzen Wright,” according to the indictment. The last count charges them with trying to kill him between April 1, 2010 and July 17, 2010 in an attempt that included meeting and agreeing to kill him, acquiring guns, recruiting an un-indicted co-conspirator and on the part of Turner, “traveling to and entering Lorenzen Wright’s home outside of Atlanta, Georgia to commit said criminal offense,” the indictment says.

Sherra Wright is scheduled to return to court in Riverside County, California today as she fights extradition to Tennessee on conspiracy and first-degree murder charges in the death of her slain ex-husband, former NBA player Lorenzen Wright, seven years ago.

A judge explained during a short hearing last month that all he must consider to have her extradited is whether she is the person named in a warrant for her arrest.

“She’s exercising her right to go through the process,” her attorney Eric Keen said in December. “The burden is on the prosecution to prove it’s her.”

The California extradition hearing was delayed once before so Wright could have a medical evaluation. Her lawyer hasn’t commented on her health, but said she is coherent.

She’s being held without bond at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside. Her hearing is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. Central Time.

The last count charges them with trying to kill him between April 1, 2010 and July 17, 2010 in an attempt that included meeting and agreeing to kill him, acquiring guns, recruiting an unindicted co-conspirator and on the part of Turner, “traveling to and entering Lorenzen Wright’s home outside of Atlanta, Georgia to commit said criminal offense,” the indictment says.

The body of Lorenzen Wright, 34, was found badly decomposed in late July 2010 near Callis Cutoff Road, and investigators found evidence of shell casings from different calibers at the scene. He apparently called 911 shortly after midnight on July 19, 2010, from a field near TPC Southwind golf course. At least five gunshot wounds were documented in an autopsy.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — The ex-wife of former NBA player Lorenzen Wright is fighting authorities’ attempt to extradite her from California to Tennessee, where she is charged with killing him in 2010.

Sherra Wright made a very brief appearance Wednesday in Riverside County Superior Court. A judge explained that the only issue in her extradition is whether or not she is the person named in the arrest warrant out of Memphis. Wright said she understood and was told to return for a hearing Jan. 8.

“She’s exercising her right to go through the process,” her attorney Eric Keen said told the Desert Sun newspaper in Palm Springs after the hearing. “From my point of view, it’s normal.”

Assistant District Attorney Paul Hagerman, who is prosecuting Wright in Shelby County, Tennessee, said, “We will pursue getting her back here to face these charges.”

Wright, 46, was arrested last week and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Lorenzen Wright.

He played for 13 seasons as a forward and center in the NBA, including several for the Grizzlies in Memphis, where he was born and raised.

His decomposing body was found in suburban Memphis 10 days after he was reported missing. He had been shot multiple times.

A statement from the Shelby County district attorney’s office said Sherra Wright and a landscaper named Billy R. Turner conspired to kill Lorenzen Wright.

Turner was arrested earlier this month after a gun used in the killing was discovered in a lake in Mississippi. He also has been charged with first-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty.

Sherra Wright received $1 million from her ex-husband’s life insurance policy. She agreed to a settlement in 2014 in a court dispute over how she spent the money meant to benefit their six children, The Commercial Appeal newspaper in Memphis has reported.
